CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking, for its Quebec station, candidates for the position of radio producer for its program Première Heure. In this position, you will report to the Senior Head of Information and Programming - Quebec.

The chosen person will be in charge of planning, designing, organizing or developing the production and production of a daily live broadcast, in the studio or outdoors. The work must comply with Radio-Canada policies, standards and practices regarding journalism and broadcasting, and it is the responsibility of the producer to ensure this. The radio producer has a lot of latitude to exercise initiative, independent judgment and creativity. This person will ensure the day-to-day and ongoing coordination of the work of others.

Key tasks:

  • Contributes ideas for program content; participates in the preparation of program objectives.
  • Obtains studios, crews, lines, uplinks, remotes and other technical and production resources required by the program on behalf of all Producers and freelancers.
  • Assists in developing program content including writing, researching, and/or editing. Prepares scripts; ensures adherence to the style and format of the program.
  • Organizes the participation of interviewees, creative contributors and other participants, develops background, introduction, and line of questioning, conducts or arranges for any necessary research, and ensures the briefing of hosts. Maintains contact files.
  • Manage the program’s budget and report on it.
  • Demonstrate curiosity about new digital formats and seize opportunities to use them, by producing daily multimedia content for our various digital platforms, including the station's website and Radio-Canada's Ohdio application.
  • Participates in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.

As required, performs the following tasks:

  • Select music, sound effects and/or actuality.
  • Determine the order and importance of the various elements of a program.
  • Direct a program, either live or pre-packaged, in studio or at a remote location.
  • Assign, direct and co-ordinate the work of other personnel working on a project for which the Producer is responsible.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate contacts with other Radio-Canada services.
  • Log programs and music in appropriate information systems.
  • Assist in maintaining a level of communication or rapport with members of the audience which is both feasible and appropriate to the style and nature of the program.
  • If necessary, ensure, in collaboration with copyright clearance agents or others, that appropriate authorization has been obtained to use all materials used in the program.
  • Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station.

You possess:

  • University degree or the equivalent in communications; communications and journalism; communications, writing and multimedia; or any other relevant university degree.
  • Five (5) years' journalistic experience of which at least three (3) must involve work in radio and/or television broadcasting. Experience working across media lines an asset.
  • Fluency in French, good knowledge of English (an asset).
  • Proven experience in producing journalistic programs and stories.
  • Proven ability to generate original journalism.
  • Knowledge of, and significant experience in, radio programming and in production for news and information programs including a demonstrated ability to write, edit vet and line-up on air content.
  • A demonstrated understanding of journalistic practices in the broadcasting industry.
  • Excellent editorial judgment.
  • Good knowledge of issues affecting Quebec region.
  • A keen eye and ear for stories and story development in terms of both news and current affairs.
  • Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada programming.
  • Understanding of CBC Journalistic Policy.
  • Able to make good decisions rapidly and frequently, often under deadline, ability to handle stress and to work under stress.
  • Able to keep track of a number of simultaneous activities; to plan and prioritize; to analyze complex journalistic and operational issues.
  • Leadership skills to inspire and direct a creative, experienced and self-motivated staff in consultative, respect and "team approach" style.
