Position: Radiation Therapist I
Department: Cancer Care Program
Type: Temporary Full-time (until December 31, 2025, with the possibility of extension)
Hours: 70 Hours Bi-weekly (8 hours; Days, On-Call, Standby)
Salary: LX-28 ($48.82 to $57.51 per hour) ($32.82 - $41.51 base rate plus $16.00 pensionable wage premium*)

Job Summary:
The Radiation Therapist I is responsible for:

  1. Providing radiation services and patient care in accordance with established policies and standards of professional practice for radiation therapy.
  2. Providing radiation services through treatment planning, delivery, and follow-up.
  3. Providing individualized radiation therapy simulation, planning, and treatments to patients in consultation with the oncology team.
  4. Administering prescribed radiation treatments using complex equipment and clinical judgment following departmental policies and procedures and standards of care.
  5. Using medical imaging equipment including X-ray, CT, MRI, and PET to ensure treatments are delivered accurately.
  6. Monitoring the progress of the patient and suggesting amendments to treatment plans when necessary.
  7. Supervision, teaching, and evaluation of Radiation Therapy Students during their clinical placement.
  8. Supervision and facilitating orientation of newly hired Radiation Therapists.
  9. Providing patient care through patient assessment, reviewing patient history, educating patients and families on the treatment process and side effects, and recommending self-care measures.
  10. Assisting patients in the interpretation of the treatment plan and evaluating the patient's understanding of treatment and side effects.
  11. Ensuring that patients and their families are aware of services available in the Provincial Cancer Care Program and in the community.
  12. Consulting with and/or referring patients to members of other health care disciplines as required. Consulting with Dosimetrists, Medical Physicists, and Radiation Oncologists on optimal treatment parameters.
  13. Maintaining patient records by collecting and documenting information related to the patient and health care history, radiation therapist assessment, symptom and side effect management, and patient and family education.
  14. Performing quality assurance checks of equipment according to established policies and procedures, maintaining records of checks and taking appropriate action on equipment malfunctions.
  15. Performing quality assurance checks of Patient Electronic Medical Record by following established policies and procedures, maintaining records of checks and taking appropriate action when necessary.

Radiation Therapists report to the Provincial Manager of Radiation Therapy.

Job Demands:
By applying for this job, you acknowledge an understanding that regular requirements and demands of this job include (but are not limited to):
Regularly lifting or moving objects less than 10 lbs. (i.e., supplies, linens, charts, etc.), and occasionally objects between 10-50 lbs. (i.e., lead shielding, supplies, equipment, breast board, immobilization devices, and lifting beam modifying equipment), requiring strength and endurance.
Pushing and pulling patients over 50 lbs. in order to position/reposition them to perform treatments.
Regularly standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods when performing procedures/treatments, or reviewing data on monitors.
Constantly performing fine finger or precision work using various controls on machines requiring very controlled movements.
Using hand tools that require accurate control and steadiness. Gross motor skills are also required to reposition patients.

Job Qualifications:
Graduation from an approved/accredited degree/diploma program in Radiation Therapy is required.
Current registration and member in good standing with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) in Radiation Therapy is required.
Current and continuing BLS certification is required.
Comprehensive knowledge of departmental, organizational, and professional standards.
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain successful working relationships.

A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
