Position Summary:The Public Engagement Strategist is responsible for planning and executing public engagement approaches, strategies, and tactics. This role provides strategic engagement advice, support, and tools to business areas while integrating best practices into corporate engagement policies and processes. Reporting to the Manager, Public Engagement and Research, the strategist ensures engagement initiatives align with corporate goals and community needs.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:- Provide strategic advice and direction on public engagement activities involving the community, stakeholders, and City Council.
- Develop, implement, and manage public engagement plans that align with corporate and divisional objectives.
- Offer engagement guidance to the City Manager, Executive Leadership Team, Mayor, and Council.
- Manage portfolio work plans and budgets to support engagement initiatives.
- Collaborate with internal teams to align and implement engagement strategies, messages, and activities.
- Support internal clients and external consultants in the development and execution of engagement plans.
- Prepare and contribute to engagement-supporting communication materials, including news releases, briefing notes, and digital content.
- Analyze and communicate engagement findings to inform decision-making.
- Develop and maintain corporate resources for engagement initiatives.
- Lead facilitation efforts and support the professional development of colleagues in public engagement best practices.
Key Qualifications:- A university degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or a related field OR a two-year diploma in Public Relations.
- Minimum of five years of experience in a communications environment, with at least two years in a senior communications role.
- Experience leading strategic engagement initiatives and consultative processes.
- Municipal government experience is an asset.
- IAP2 Training in Public Participation or similar engagement training is an asset.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to express ideas effectively.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building abilities.
- Demonstrated leadership and project management experience.
- Analytical skills with experience handling data and engagement statistics.
- Creative problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
