In New Zealand, Psychiatry is generally practised as a hybrid of primary and secondary care specialty, based either in an inpatient unit or in specialist community mental health teams (CMHTs). To work as a Psychiatrist (Senior Medical Officer) in New Zealand, you must become registered to practice with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Practitioners must meet competency standards and hold Annual Practising Certificates (APCs) to work safely and effectively.
Salary and benefits
Senior Medical Officers receive 6 weeks of annual leave and 12 paid public holidays, giving you time to explore our beautiful country and raise a family in our diverse communities. Along with your base salary as a Senior Medical Officer, you will have an annual Continuing Medical Education (CME) allowance of EUR €8,400 (NZ $16,000) (pro-rated for part-time employees), reimbursement of your registration and practising certificate fees, and your professional indemnity insurance is covered by Health New Zealand.
Senior Medical Officers receive a base salary relative to their level of experience.
