Excellent opportunity for a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join the expanding Psychiatry department at Kelowna General Hospital. In this position you will be part of a team of dedicated psychiatrists providing inpatient and outpatient child and youth mental health services within the hospital and the steadily expanding local community. Hospital work would involve psychiatric assessment and treatment of patients up to and including 18 years of age, who are usually admitted through the Emergency Department. This service is supported by a Mental Health Liaison worker to assist with access to community-based programs. In addition, KGH is the home to the Interior Health tertiary Adolescent Psychiatry Unit which offers a specialized inpatient program for youth ages 12-17 who are struggling with significant psychiatric symptoms, such as psychosis, mood disorders, or anxiety disorders that require an extended stay for assessment and treatment planning. The Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit has 8 beds and the program runs seven days per week. Length of stay varies between 10 days to several weeks.
Evaluation of our patients is carried out by a multidisciplinary team comprising of nurses, youth and family counselors, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, teachers, psychiatrists and other disciplines as needed. Our assessment process requires the active participation of adolescents, their families and community Mental Health support services.
Duties will include, but not be limited to:
Community work would involve supporting family physicians, pediatricians, and child & youth mental health services. A collaborative program exists to serve the needs of youth in transition to adulthood. Subspecialty areas include eating disorders and substance use disorders. Kelowna is also one of seven BC cities to have a Foundry Centre in the community. Foundry is a province wide initiative that offers young people ages 12-24 health and wellness resources, services and supports – online and through integrated service centres.
This role also offers teaching opportunities to medical students and residents as KGH is affiliated with UBC Faculty of Medicine Southern Medical Program.
