Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba.

Position Overview

Working within the Emergency team and the Mental Health Observation Unit, the Psychiatric Emergency Nurse provides mental health expertise in patient assessment, care planning, intervention and evaluation within the Emergency Department, the Mental Health Observation Unit and the Facility. Provides support and mental healthcare to emergency patients and families experiencing stress or crisis.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years recent acute mental health experience required.
  • Child and Adolescent Mental Health experience.
  • Previous experience in an Emergency Department preferred.
  • Demonstrated competence in psychiatric assessment within a biopsychosocial framework, crisis intervention, therapeutic communication, co-occurring disorders and awareness of community resources available to clients.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing required.
  • BScMH, BScPN or BN preferred.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM) required.
  • Professional Nursing Codes of Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses.

  • Demonstrated excellence in mental health clinical skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills.
  • Effective teaching skills and abilities working with clients and families.
  • Ability to collaborate and provide leadership with a team.
  • Ability to practice independently and as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking, creative problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to utilize relevant Emergency Department computer systems.
