Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

Job Summary

Sexual and reproductive healthcare (SRH) services are essential to health and wellbeing and should be accessible to everyone; however, Indigenous women, Two-Spirit, Indigiqueer, and gender diverse peoples (IW2SIQGD) are significantly less likely to access SRH services globally, especially in Canada. The Indigenous Health Equity Lab is hiring a Project Coordinator for the project, Amplify: Elevating the voices of Indigenous women, Two-Spirit, Indigiqueer, and Gender-Diverse voices. The project is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Project Grant. The work will be guided by and is grounded in Indigenous methodologies and an intersectional Indigenous Gender-Based Analysis+ (IGBA+) lens. Amplify is a community-based participatory action program of Indigenous research that draws upon qualitative, quantitative, Indigenous, and art-based methods. The project aims to develop evidence-based and community-driven practice guidelines informed by Indigenous ways of knowing and amplifying Indigenous community voices to directly inform equitable and culturally-safe reproductive and sexual health care for IW2SIQGD.

The Indigenous Health Equity Lab is an Indigenous-led program of research established to identify and inform the implementation of culturally safe and equitable health services, support reproductive justice, gender health equity, and amplify Indigenous voices. We are situated on the unceded and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Nations.

As part of a multidisciplinary and diverse team, the Project Coordinator is responsible for day-to-day coordination and implementation of the project, including the coordination and planning for research talking circles with IW2SIQGD.

The Project Coordinator will work with community partners, participatory advisory groups, and oversee informed consent, recruitment, and screening of participants for both survey and qualitative research phases. The role involves ensuring communication with the community, fostering stakeholder relationships, and functioning as the point of contact to receive and convey information related to the project(s). Responsibilities also include documenting, tracking, and reporting key activities; maintaining an understanding of the project schedule, deliverables, and commitments; and communicating project status to all stakeholders. The coordinator will prepare reports, briefing documents, and presentations, and coordinate research-related appointments and meetings. At the early stages of the grant activities, the incumbent is expected to assist with some lab administration work.

Supervised by and reporting to Dr. Brittany Bingham, the incumbent works closely with academic and clinical researchers, the Division of Social Medicine, the UBC Department of Medicine, WHRI staff, trainees, peer researchers, and a variety of community stakeholders. The Project Coordinator liaises with community stakeholders to facilitate knowledge translation activities to build awareness of research and maintain research capacity.

Work Performed

  • Oversee research project implementation, including protocols, ethical guidelines, and methodologies for studies on court and justice systems.
  • Coordinate project timelines and deliverables, collaborating with the Principal Investigator to address challenges and engaging with diverse stakeholders to communicate progress.
  • Responsible for project budget and reconciliation of project finances as needed.
  • Draft data collection forms, informed consent, recruitment materials, and assist with talking circles and active referral to services to support project goals and ethical standards.
  • Draft reports and knowledge translation materials tailored to various audiences and assist research assistants with data analysis and manuscript preparation.
  • Plan and coordinate all logistics for community advisory and partner meetings, including preparation and delivery of materials and presentations, producing research meeting agendas, minutes, and summaries, and follow-up with relevant stakeholders.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

The incumbent will work out of the Indigenous Health Equity Lab in designated, appropriate workspace at the WHRI office. Travel to communities for meetings will be required from time to time (as public health allows).

This position works with a high degree of independence and responsibility and exercises considerable judgment. Errors in judgment could result in serious financial or reputational consequences for the Lab, undermining its ability to meet commitments and achieve strategic objectives.
