Founded in 2013 by Alexandra Babbel and a group of local arts leaders, Opera Kelowna is a registered, non-profit, charitable status society and member of the Association for Opera in Canada. In 2020, company leadership changed and the company is now led by Rosemary Thomson, Artistic Director, and Brianna Wells, Managing Director, with support from an active and supportive Board of Directors. The Production Assistant is a training position for someone with a passion for the performing arts, and who has some experience with theatre/event production. Extensive training and support will be available, including from the Managing Director, Production Manager and the Artistic Director.
This is a 9 week placement beginning on June 25, 2025. Start date can be flexible.
Average 30 hours/week (some evening and weekend work expected; schedule set during hiring). Mileage can be reimbursed if the Assistant uses their own vehicle for work-errands.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Production Manager in communication, logistical, and administrative tasks related to the delivery of Opera Kelowna’s mainstage production and summer training program leading up to August rehearsal period.
- Act as Assistant Stage Manager for rehearsal period and performances of La Traviata (Aug 4-24).
- Liaise with artists regarding scheduling, logistics, safety and other aspects of performances and events in both written and verbal forms.
- Assist with load in and load out of production and other community events as needed. Confirm that Opera Kelowna COVID-19 safety is being maintained for all Opera Kelowna patrons as per direction from the Production Manager.
- Ensure any necessary filing related to production activities is accurate and complete (use of email, Gdrive, and other project management software).
- This position requires punctuality and on-time arrival at all rehearsals, performances and events.
- Office tasks can be done on a flexible schedule, excepting regular production and team meetings which will be scheduled at the beginning of the appointment. Rehearsal, programming and performance tasks will be laid out at the beginning of the appointment. Some evening and weekend work will be required.
- Learn and work within Opera Kelowna’s Neurodiversity protocols.
Qualifications:
- Excellent time management and organization skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
- An affinity for the performing arts.
- Candidates with technical theatre experience will be given preference.
- Strong teamwork skills.
