Title: Product Owner
Reports To: Head of Product or Senior Product Manager

Location: This role can be performed remotely from anywhere in Canada or from any of our GHD offices located in Toronto, Mississauga, Waterloo, or Markham. Ideally the candidate will be located within a 2-hour drive of Waterloo.

The Product Owner (PO) works with Product Managers, UX, Development and other stakeholders to create, refine and prioritize Pitches for Shape Up Cycle Bets. The PO plays a key role in the Agile development process bridging the gap between customer & product stakeholders and technical execution and delivery. They lead the creation and refinement of Epics and Stories that describe the features, functionality, and capabilities to be developed. The PO prioritizes the work in the Agile Product Backlog and works with the Scrum Master to assemble Sprints. The PO collaborates closely with the cross-functional Agile team to ensure a clear understanding of the requirements and to facilitate planning, development, and delivery of new features, functionality, and capabilities. The PO also acts as a key resource for the Marketing, Sales, and Customer Experience teams by providing documentation and release notes related to the current product and new features being released.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Shape Up Planning Process
- Works with Product Managers, UX, Development and product stakeholders to identify Pitches to be written.
- Writes and refines pitches with input from Product Managers, UX, Development and product stakeholders.
- Works with the Program Manager to get sizes for Pitches from Software development.
- Works with the Program Manager and Product Managers to prioritize and finalize the Bet.
- Supports the review, refinement and finalization of the Bet with the Leadership Team and Product Stakeholders.
- Supports the Software Development team during the Build period (Shape Up Cycle).
- Works with the Program Manager to make any adjustments necessary to Pitches and the Bet during the Build Period.
Agile Software Development Process
- Leads the creation and refinement of Epics and Stories that describe the features, functionality, and capabilities to be developed as described in the Shape Up Pitches.
- Works with the Scrum Master to review Epics and Stories with the Software Development team as part of the Agile process.
- Prioritizes the Agile Product Backlog – including both bugs and stories - based upon the priorities defined by the Shape Up Pitches, Product Roadmap, and guidance from the Product Managers.
- Works with the Scrum Master to assemble Sprints.
- Primary contact in the Agile team to ensure a clear understanding of the requirements and acceptance criteria described in Epics & Stories.
- Works with QA (Quality Assurance) to ensure that acceptance criteria for stories have been successfully delivered.
- Delivers the Sprint Demo in partnership with the Product Managers.
Marketing Support
- Acts as a key resource for the Marketing, Sales, and Customer Experience (CX) teams for information about the current state of the product as well as new features and functionality being delivered.
- Provides release notes for major new features being released.
- Supports the CX team in the creation of release notes for fixes and minor features being released.
- Creates product documentation for the current product capabilities and for new features being delivered.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in business, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- Proven experience as a Product Owner, Business Analyst, or a similar role in Agile environments.
- Ideally has a Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) or similar Agile certification.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Familiarity with the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
- Strong understanding of Agile methodologies, especially Scrum and Kanban.
- Experience with Agile tools (e.g., JIRA, Confluence).
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Knowledge of UX/UI principles.
