Principal Engineering Specialist, Fly-By-Wire Flight Control Systems - CANADA

Note: This position opening is in Canada and initially will be fully remote until the office is established.

About EOS Aircraft, Inc.:

EOS Aircraft, Inc. is an innovative aviation company dedicated to developing a new regional airplane that represents the next leap in sustainable aviation technology. Our mission is to redefine regional air travel by offering an environmentally friendly and efficient aircraft solution. We are on a journey to make air travel more sustainable and accessible, and we're looking for a Fly-by-Wire Flight Control System Principal Engineer to bring experience in this exciting and challenging endeavor.

Job Summary:

A highly skilled and motivated Principal Engineering Specialist, Fly-By-Wire Flight Control Systems is needed to take the lead on the design and integration for a clean sheet electrified regional aircraft. The FBW Principal Engineer will be responsible for the conceptualization, design, integration, and certification of the Flight Control System, including system architectures development, surface actuation schemes, and system failures management / flutter protection. This will require close collaboration with the Flight Sciences Team that will be developing the associated FBW Control Laws that provide superior flying handling qualities.

The position will work heavily with a diverse group of suppliers on a wide range of tasks including system architecture, sizing and simulation of systems and components, identifying and selecting suppliers, requirements management, and integration. The successful candidate will report directly to the Head of Mechanical Systems and will work closely with all the engineering teams, suppliers, and regulatory agencies to deliver a FBW Flight Control System that is well integrated to make the safest, most efficient and sustainable next generation commercial aircraft.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate directly with suppliers and partners to design the FBW FCS and associated system architectures, define requirements, resolve technical challenges, and ensure delivery of high-quality components and systems.
  • Integrate the FBW FCS with the aircraft’s flight sciences, structures, and systems engineering teams to achieve optimal design solutions.
  • Integrate the FBW FCS with the High Lift FCS and provide oversight and recommendations for High Lift FCS to achieve optimal design solutions.
  • Selection and integration of the surface actuation systems to meet the unique requirements of an electrified regional aircraft, that does not have a central hydraulics system.
  • Strong emphasis will be placed on selecting suitable Electro-Mechanical Actuators (EMAs), where practical to meet minimum weight solutions.
  • Evaluation of surface failures to determine appropriate actuation redundancies and surface flutter management when disconnected.
  • Contribute to the integration of high voltage actuation for surface actuation into the aircraft design with a focus on performance, weight, and sustainability.
  • Ensure all systems meet relevant aerospace standards and regulatory requirements for certification.
  • Integrating internal and external components and systems into the virtual aircraft design to ensure that they meet aircraft space and kinematic design requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Teamwork: Proven ability to work with multidisciplinary teams and fast-moving projects from concept through to certification and production. Working with suppliers to innovate on new and existing technologies to deliver next generation systems on time and on budget.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years in the aerospace industry within an aircraft or OEM environment, with substantial experience in engineering, particularly through the design, development, and certification lifecycle of EASA/FAA Part 23, 25, 27, or 29 aircraft.
  • Expertise: In-depth knowledge and relevant experience with flight-critical, digital, fly-by-wire flight control systems, particularly with new and novel technologies, such as high voltage systems, electric actuation and relevant system architectures.
  • Problem-Solving: Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to address technical challenges through innovative solutions.
  • Communication: Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, capable of effectively collaborating with internal teams, suppliers, and regulatory bodies.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Master’s degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline is preferred.

Desired Attributes:

  • A strong passion for innovation in aviation and a commitment to advancing sustainable transport solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of challenging systems design from initial requirements to design, supplier selection, procurement and testing. Ability to work successfully in a cross-functional environment that prioritizes the success of the overall program and company goals.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to engage effectively with all levels of the organization and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated flexibility to work in a dynamic environment typical of a start-up, contributing to the growth of EOS as an organization.
  • Prior experience in an aerospace start-up or with eVTOL or other electric aircraft development is highly valued.
  • FAA Certification experience (Part 23, 25, 27, 29) with understanding of certification requirements and the certification processes.
  • Ability to perform aircraft and system safety analysis, in conjunction with System Safety Engineers, including Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Common Mode Analysis (CMA).
  • 3D CAD skills for modeling, integration and simulation of mechanical systems (CATIA, NX, or similar) is preferred, but not required. Practical knowledge is required to facilitate directing and guidance of Design Engineers.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB & Simulink for modeling & simulation.
  • Experience with requirements management in DOORS, Cameo, or other similar systems engineering software tools.

Joining EOS Aircraft, Inc. means being part of a dynamic team that is passionate about creating the future of aviation.
