About Potash

The Jansen project in Saskatchewan, Canada is set to become one of the largest potash mines in the world and is located approximately 140 kilometers east of Saskatoon. BHP’s CAD$14 billion (US$10.5 billion) investment in the Jansen project will deliver a potash mine in Saskatchewan designed to maximize sustainability. As the largest investment in Saskatchewan’s history, Jansen is expected to generate approximately 5,500 workforce opportunities during construction and 900 long-term roles.

Purpose

The Principal Control Systems Engineer provides technical expertise in the production, development and management for autonomous fixed plant equipment and underground mining control systems in line with Operational and Technology requirements.

About the Role

To be successful in this role, you will:

  1. Develop safety requirement specifications, define and implement safety lifecycle management strategies and advise on systems safety issues.
  2. Develop a system integration strategy/plan, assemble and integrate systems accordingly.
  3. Develop and select effective design solutions, work with relevant vendors/stakeholders to procure products, and provide design expertise to inform selection.
  4. Install, operate and maintain sensing, measurement and actuation devices that collect the necessary data to enable the successful functioning of automated solutions across BHP.
  5. Develop, verify and maintain Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control, monitor and collect data from operational processes.
  6. Conduct process modelling, use process control algorithms, test, and maintain process control systems to enhance the security and performance of control systems across BHP.
  7. Install, conduct verification/functional testing and regular post-installation calibration of automated equipment to optimise the safety and performance of automated operations across BHP.
  8. Develop, commission and maintain high performance supervisory control systems (e.g. SCADA) to control fixed-plant systems, machinery and processes at desired levels of performance.

Work Location

This position will be based in Saskatoon with regular visits to the Jansen mine site. The associated work schedule will be 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.

About You

To be considered, you will need:

  1. Tertiary qualification in electrical engineering/control systems engineering or equivalent.
  2. Functional Safety qualifications (i.e. TUV Certified Engineer).
  3. Good knowledge of various other hardware and software technologies such as encoders, 3D Laser Scanning systems, etc.
  4. Strong experience with vendor and contract management practices & processes.
