Your Role

CBC News British Columbia is looking for an Associate Producer for our operation in Prince Rupert. You will be part of the radio/audio current affairs and video streaming production team working with producers and reporters to deliver highly crafted editorial material for the local radio program, Daybreak North, and all CBC B.C.'s content platforms. The successful candidate will have strong writing and desktop editing skills and news judgment and be able to work flexible shifts, including early mornings, evenings and weekends. Candidates with a demonstrated knowledge of, or experience working with, First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples and communities are encouraged to apply.

Key Tasks:

  1. Contributes and pitches ideas for program content; participates in the preparation of program objectives.
  2. Direct live radio program team in studio.
  3. Perform on air through various platforms.
  4. Obtains studios, crews, lines, uplinks, remotes and other technical and production resources required by the program.
  5. Assists in developing program and digital/video content including writing, researching, field production, and/or editing.
  6. Prepares scripts; ensures adherence to the style and format of the program.
  7. Organizes the participation of interviewees, creative contributors and other participants, develops background, introduction, and line of questioning, conducts or arranges for any necessary research, and ensures the briefing of hosts.
  8. Maintains contact files.
  9. Creates content for digital social platforms as required.
  10. Participates in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.
  11. Adheres to and follows the journalistic standards and practices to achieve the high quality standards CBC is known for.

As Required, Performs the Following Tasks:

  1. Select music, sound effects.
  2. Produce program elements.
  3. Edit and mix, or direct the editing and mixing of audio and/or visual elements.
  4. Write continuity, edit text, edit audio and video for broadcast.
  5. Write stories for digital platforms.
  6. Log programs and music in appropriate information systems.
  7. Assist in maintaining a level of communication or rapport with members of the audience which is both feasible and appropriate to the style and nature of the program.
  8. Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station.

Your Profile:

  1. Community connections and a deep understanding and appreciation of the diversity of perspective and opinion in Northern BC.
  2. Familiarity and proven connections with Black, Indigenous and People of Colour communities, people living with a disability, and other underrepresented communities in British Columbia and across Canada.
  3. A deep understanding of BC's northern geography and diverse issues.
  4. Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong story ideas.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work with a team, you may occasionally be leading your work group.
  6. Ability to work independently and maintain communication with a remote team.
  7. Strong writing and editorial abilities.
  8. Ability to work in a multi-platform environment.
  9. Strong and enthusiastic team player.
  10. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  11. Curious, quick thinking, incisive and critical thinker.
  12. Innovative with programming ideas.
  13. Experience using social media to research, develop and source stories.
  14. Committed to serving and growing audiences.
  15. Willingness to present on-air is an asset.
  16. University degree or equivalent, with a minimum of two years in a similar position - preferred.
