Job Summary:
The Approaches to Community Wellbeing is a regional resource to 31 First Nations Communities, providing expertise, support, services, and programming in public health. The Healthy Living section includes Preventing Infectious Diseases, focusing on infection prevention and case management of reportable diseases. Under the direction of the Preventing Infectious Diseases Manager, the Preventing Infectious Diseases Nurse will coordinate clinical infectious disease activities, working in conjunction with the program team and public health specialists.

Qualifications:

  1. Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)
  2. Current Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses in Ontario
  3. Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an approved University with identifiable community health nursing content
  4. Experience in public/community health nursing, program planning, implementation, and evaluation
  5. Knowledge of and/or experience with health/communicable disease programs, including TB and sexually transmitted infections
  6. Knowledge of and sensitivity to native culture, and government health policies as they apply to Aboriginal people
  7. Excellent communication skills, including listening, oral and written English skills, public speaking, and making presentations
  8. Strong interpersonal skills
  9. Excellent keyboarding skills, with knowledge of Epi-Info as an asset
  10. Willingness to travel
  11. Valid Ontario G driver's licence
  12. Fluency in a Sioux Lookout Zone First Nations dialect is an asset
  13. Ability to perform the requirements of the role on a regular basis

Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinate and monitor strategic clinical infectious disease control activities, including case finding, contact tracing, and vaccinations
  2. Assist with outbreak management as recommended by the Public Health Specialist
  3. Provide clinical expertise to the Preventing Infectious Diseases Program and community health care providers
  4. Participate in the development and evaluation of the TB Control Program work plan
  5. Assist in developing and evaluating education materials for the Preventing Infectious Disease Program
  6. Provide orientation of the program to primary health care providers and facilitate continued learning opportunities
  7. Monitor adherence to program standards and follow up on discrepancies
  8. Advocate for clients and communities to enhance health determinants
  9. Participate on committees as a representative for the SLFNHA
  10. Establish and maintain relationships with community health leadership and staff
  11. Support the preparation of reports on infectious diseases and program outcomes
  12. Conduct quality control surveillance on data management and systems operations
  13. Travel extensively to conduct case and contact management and community education
  14. Perform other duties as directed by SLFHNHA
