Job Summary:
The Approaches to Community Wellbeing provides expertise, support, services, and programming in public health to the region. The program also supports communities in the development, implementation, and monitoring of their own Approaches to Community Wellbeing. The Healthy Living section of the Model includes Preventing Chronic Diseases, which looks at promoting healthy lifestyles including physical activity, nutrition, and smoking cessation.
The Preventing Chronic Diseases Manager will provide oversight and direction for the Preventing Chronic Diseases programming of the Approaches to Community Wellbeing. The Preventing Chronic Diseases Manager will oversee the regional services provided by the Preventing Chronic Diseases Team and will work with communities to enhance their capacity around Preventing Chronic Diseases initiatives.
The Preventing Chronic Diseases Manager is directly accountable to the Director of Approaches to Community Wellbeing.
Qualifications:
• Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)
• Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects in the Sioux Lookout Zone is an asset.
• Masters in Public Health is an asset
• Undergraduate degree in a health related field (health sciences, nutrition, public health, nursing, etc.)
• Minimum two years experience in public health
• Experience planning, supervising, and evaluating projects
• Previous leadership and supervisory experience
• Understanding of Public Health Systems (including Health Promotion and Protection Act and the Ontario Public Health Standards), and First Nations health systems;
• Understanding of the unique determinants of health for First Nations in northwestern Ontario, and the health landscape in which they seek services;
• Extensive knowledge of public health, chronic diseases, nutrition, and health promotion
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Experience managing budgets and fulfilling reporting requirements to funders
• Ability to develop and maintain respectful/cooperative relationships with First Nations people, communities, service stakeholders, and health care providers to promote an integrated seamless delivery of service
• Experience and training in cultural competency with First Nations
• Must be willing to travel
• The ability to perform the requirements of the position on a regular basis
