Position Overview

We are looking for a curious and creative journalist to fill in as host of The Globe and Mail’s Decibel podcast for a 15-month contract. As the host, you will help drive the editorial tone of the show through your personal character, interview style and editorial decisions.

We are looking for a versatile journalist – a great conversationalist, careful listener and engaging speaker. You’re able to ask insightful questions and have a diverse news diet – curious and questioning about news, business and pop culture. You can be tough on issues, able to hold guests accountable but also show you have a fun side and a sense of humour. Audience growth, panel presentations and relationship management with colleagues are also a part of the host’s responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • Alongside senior producer, help steer the editorial direction of The Decibel
  • Conducting daily interviews with guests
  • Write episode introduction copy and interview questions with producers
  • Able to manage and be well-read on multiple news files at once
  • Ask questions on behalf of the listener and be the centrepiece of the show
  • Public facing responsibilities in panels, conversations and audience engagement on behalf of The Globe and Mail and The Decibel brand
Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will have 2+ years of experience preferably in journalism, mainstream or a personal project. Experience with broadcast journalism and hosting is preferred.
  • Journalistic curiosity, enthusiasm and intuition that leads you to ask the question no one has asked yet;
  • Experience writing broadcast script and interviewing for audio;
  • Able to change tones between being tough, yet fun and engaging for the listener
  • An appreciation for the diversity of opinion, perspective, and experience of our guests— and how to reflect that on the show;
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns and methods
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet same-day deadlines
  • A voracious news diet, including Canadian politics and business

This position requires working out of the Toronto office and in-person attendance for all interviews planned.

APPLICATION: Please submit your resume and a cover letter showing your storytelling skills.
SALARY: This position is classified as a Host in Group C of the Editorial Collective Agreement.
