Job description

Plant Electrical Supervisor is responsible for highly skilled work involving supervising and coordinating the activities of workers engaged in the maintenance, repair, and testing of all electrical equipment in the plant. Performs other related work as required. Because the Authority has a responsibility to serve the public 24 hours per day, an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand and may be called in on short notice during power outages and other emergencies.

Responsibilities:

  • Interprets wiring diagrams to modify or add numerous wiring circuits for electrical instrumentation and control functions.
  • Makes necessary changes to blueprints to reflect additions, modifications, deletion, or revisions.
  • Inspects and repairs brushes, bearings of generators, motors, and converters.
  • Coordinates routine maintenance and schedules preventative maintenance assignments.
  • Orders and stocks parts and materials necessary for the proper maintenance of electrical equipment.
  • Inspects worker's completed work and work in progress to ensure compliance with instructions and applicable company and government rules and regulations.
  • Tanks and detaches transformer cards; performs work involving the brazing of transformer connections.
  • Dismantles, repairs, aligns, and reassembles motors, meters, control circuits, and similar devices.
  • Supervises the repair of electrical machinery such as lathes, drill presses, grinders, etc.
  • Conducts high voltage maintenance work on the power plant sub-stations and switch gear.
  • Coordinates electrical repair work with plant personnel to maintain uninterrupted service wherever possible.
  • Participates in training programs as required; recommends improvements in electrical maintenance procedures.
  • Supervises workers engaged in the repair and replacement of plant equipment such as relays, switches, motors, starters, breakers, turbines, and boiler controls.
  • Trains employees in power plant electrical work and safety practices and procedures.
  • Maintains reports; time and attendance reports.
  • Initiates or recommends personnel action such as promotion, transfer, or disciplinary measures; evaluates employee work performance.
  • Supervises and trains lower classification electrical personnel in their work.
  • Assigns work to workers and reviews completed work to ensure that work is completed in accordance with specifications and instructions.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems; may confer with worker's representatives to resolve grievances.
  • Performs all work in accordance with safety regulations, company policy, and OSHA standards.

Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of the layout, construction, functions, and operation of all electrical equipment and apparatus in the plant and about the plant property, and be proficient in troubleshooting.
  • Thorough knowledge of the practical and efficient methods of electrical and instrument maintenance and repair work.
  • Thorough knowledge of the rules, safety practices, and procedures applicable to the work.
  • Thorough knowledge of preventative maintenance program and procedure.
  • Thorough knowledge of the tools and equipment and their skilled use as required in the work.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from complex blueprints and specifications.
  • Ability to lead and direct other employees and obtain cooperation and satisfactory work results.
  • Ability to inspect electrical equipment and to determine cause(s) of malfunction.
  • Ability to perform technical repair work.
  • Skill in the repair and maintenance of electrical power plant equipment.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of tools of the electrical trade.
  • Ability to operate and utilize personal computers and related peripherals.

Education: High School diploma, including courses in the electrical trade, and seven (7) years of progressively responsible power plant electrical maintenance work; four (4) years must have been as a Plant Electrician 1st Class.
