Nestled in the heart of the U of T campus, the Hart House Fitness Centre is a community-centered boutique fitness space that brings together U of T students, staff, faculty, and the greater community. This fitness and wellness space is uniquely part of the larger cultural, learning and wellness Centre that is Hart House.

Your opportunity:

Under the guidance of the Director, Fitness, Wellness & Recreation, the Physical Activity and Aquatics Program Supervisor is responsible for planning and implementing components of fitness and aquatics programming. This includes directing the activities of casual staff, conducting staff training, performing fitness and aquatic training sessions and ensuring pool regulations are adhered to. The incumbent is responsible for working co-operatively in a team environment to deliver a high level of customer service to all Hart House Fitness Centre clients. This includes promoting programs, adjusting programs and processes based on feedback and fostering a positive, welcoming environment. The Physical Activity and Aquatics Program Supervisor will participate in team meetings and collaborative initiatives with other members of the Fitness, Wellness and Recreation team, as well as the broader Hart House programming team.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and implementing components of curricular and/or co-curricular programs and activities
  • Scheduling program activities
  • Directing the activities of casual staff
  • Training and coaching casual staff
  • Coordinating staff recruitment activities with contacts
  • Conducting individual and group training sessions
  • Ensuring others adhere to legislated regulations for swimming pools
  • Keeping well informed on innovations in sport and recreational facilities.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in the area of health, physical education, recreation or physical activity promotion, or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years related experience in a fitness, health, aquatics and or recreation promotion, including supervising part-time staff in a customer service-oriented setting including working with the public in a high volume, fast paced environment.
  • Proven experience supervising non-appointed staff and fostering a team culture.
  • Demonstrated organizational and prioritization skills and ability to respond to frequently changing priorities.
  • National Lifeguard Certification (Lifesaving Society).
  • Swim Instructor Certification (Lifesaving Society) or equivalent experience.
  • Fitness Instructor Certification, Personal Training Certification, Coaching Certification from a recognized organization or equivalent. (CanFitPro, NSCA-CSCS, CSEP-CPT).
  • Current CPR-C certificate (Canadian Red Cross, Lifesaving Society or St. John Ambulance) within one year of issue.
  • Current Standard First Aid Certificate (Canadian Red Cross, Lifesaving Society or St. John Ambulance) within three years of issue.
  • The incumbent must maintain all certifications as stated above while employed in this position.
  • Good decision-making and conflict resolution skills; ability to deal with challenging dynamics and handle situations of conflict with excellent listening, de-escalation and resolution skills.
  • Ability to maintain up-to-date knowledge of changing events, programs, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain diplomacy and handle information with discretion.
  • Proven collaborative team player.
  • Innovative self-starter.

  • Must have the ability to work with a flexible schedule that can include weekdays, evenings and weekends.

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Knowledge of the University of Toronto and Hart House programs.
  • Training and experience in delivery of equity-focused programming an asset, including anti-racist, anti-oppressive practice as well as Indigenous and other cultural wellness practices.
  • Sales or Marketing & Promotion experience.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 10 -- $70,844. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $90,595. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
