Job description

Discover TRIUMF, Canada's particle accelerator centre. We are a publicly funded, not-for-profit research lab that is a hub for discovery and innovation.

Our mission is to serve as Canada’s particle accelerator centre. We advance isotope science and technology, both fundamental and applied. We collaborate across communities and disciplines, from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences. We discover and innovate, inspire and educate, creating knowledge and opportunity for all.

The position is to lead the development of Single Photon Detectors at TRIUMF and coordinate this effort within the Canadian astro-particle physics community. The position includes a leadership role in the nEXO Silicon Photo-multiplier (SiPM) mass testing project supported by a CFI Innovation Fund 2020 grant.

In this role, the position will oversee the implementation of the project, coordinating work and playing a major role in establishing the strategy. The position will be responsible for leading the development of new single photon detector solutions for application in subatomic physics. The position will contribute to TRIUMF’s technology transfer effort using single photon technology that includes the following projects: Neutron Emission Spectrometer at General Fusion, Single Photon Air Analyser (SPAA), Water analysis and ranging. On the 5-year time scale, the position is expected to play a driving role in the emergence of the digital single photon detection technology.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the execution of the nEXO SiPM mass testing project. Define the strategy together with the supervisor and organize the work of all the individuals;
  • Define the single photon detector development strategy at TRIUMF together with supervisor. Oversee the implementation of the plan. Contribute to establishing collaboration for device design, manufacturing, and testing;
  • Oversee the single photon development infrastructure at TRIUMF, including the existing VERA and MIEL, and oversee their expansion;
  • Establish a pan-Canadian collaboration for the development of single photon detectors for astro-particle physics.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

The incumbent may be asked to supervise students and provide guidance to technical staff.
