Job Description:

The Langara College Photography Residency is designed for experienced photographers looking to develop a personal portfolio project centered on social advocacy or broader humanitarian themes. The residency provides time and resources for the selected candidate to develop their project, while also engaging with and supporting the college community.

The primary responsibility of the resident is to create and showcase their work during the residency. They will collaborate with students, incorporating them into the project in various capacities. Additionally, the resident will offer limited mentorship to photography students, including holding office hours and providing guidance for student projects. The resident will also support classroom activities with discussions about their residency project. They will deliver a lecture or artist talk to the broader community, enabling this audience's appreciation and understanding of both the photographer's work and the medium of photography.

The position lasts for three months, from January 22 until April 19, 2025. Applicants for the position should have a substantial commercial or portraiture photography record with recognized clients.

The stipend is $15,000 net any statutory deductions and taxes and does not include a housing allowance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Independent Activities: The candidate is required to use the majority of time to complete a portfolio project which has a significant social advocacy or social cause, with Langara providing office space, access to studios, photographic equipment and other supports. Professional Photography Program students will have the opportunity to interact as assistants, digital techs and observers to the process. The final images and process will be displayed in T building at the beginning of April, 2025.

Community Engagement: The photographer in residence is a member of the college community and therefore involved in a number of College-related events:

  • At least one community lecture/artist talk.
  • Social engagement(s) with College faculty/administration and community.
  • Student mentorship in the photography studios.
  • Office hours, one day a week for consultations with students.
  • Scheduled classroom lecture/talk for students in PHOT1100, PHOT1200 and PHOT2490.

Salary Range:

$59.28 - $94.99

Salary Range Placement:

Salary placement is on Langara instructors’ salary scale in accordance with qualifications and experience.
