Rotation/Shifts

Days, evenings, nights and weekends, 8- and 12-hour shifts. The position may be located at either the Civic, General, Riverside Campus or other TOH Satellite locations.

Availability Requirements:

As an employee of The Ottawa Hospital you would be required to provide a minimum availability of: 2 out of 3 weekends, 8 weeks during the period from June 1 to September 30, and five shifts between December 23 and January 3, inclusive of either Christmas Day, Boxing Day or December 31 / New Year's Day.

What You Will Do

  • Provide one-on-one observation and care of designated patients;
  • Assist with lifting, positioning, transferring and ambulating patients;
  • Responding to patient requests, including call bells;
  • Preparing treatment areas and operating rooms for procedures;
  • Assisting patients in daily activities including feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, etc.;
  • Record observations and report any changes/problems in patient's condition, such as mobility, temperature, appetite and behavior;
What You Will Bring

  • Secondary School Graduate;
  • Successful completion of an accredited Health Care program (i.e., Personal Support Worker, Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy, RN or RPN);
  • OR six (6) months recent patient care experience as an Orderly/OR attendant at TOH, former General, Riverside or Civic Hospitals;
  • OR currently enrolled in an accredited health-related program WITH 6 months recent patient care experience (i.e., Personal Support Worker, Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy, RN or RPN);
  • Recent CPR certification (HeartSaver or BCLS);
  • Basic knowledge of sterility and aseptic technique;
  • Basic knowledge of established Infection Control and Occupational Health & Safety practices;
  • Knowledge of body mechanics, and safe lift and transfer practices;
  • Competent oral/written/listening communication skills in English are required to communicate effectively with other members of the health care team, patients, and visitors;
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and carry out written and verbal instructions;
  • Ability to adapt and cope with changes in patient condition;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks;
  • Basic math skills required for monitoring intake/output;
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.

  • Proficiency in English and French - oral expression (advanced level) and comprehension (advanced level).
