We are seeking a Peer Food Service Worker who is enthusiastic and passionate about opportunities to work with individuals in the community. Our Peer Food Service Worker is a key member of our Housing services program. This role contributes to the support of our clients in providing invaluable services to individuals with addiction and/or mental health concerns within the Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington (KFLA) communities.

Our Peer Food Service Worker positions are members of Ontario Public Sectors Employee’s Union (OPSEU/SEFPO) Local 489 and work from various locations throughout KFLA.

Job Summary:

The Peer Food Service Worker, reporting to the Comprehensive Integrated (CI) Housing Manager, works as a part of an interdisciplinary team providing psychosocial rehabilitation and person-centered support to individuals within the Comprehensive Integrated Program. This program provides support to those with a history of long-term hospitalizations and/or who require comprehensive and integrated supports and services to assist with the transition to living in the community and/or minimizing the occurrence of hospitalizations. The CI Housing team member aims to build the capacity and strengths of individuals and be an integral member in building a sense of community within the residential setting based on the principles of psychosocial rehabilitation and the recovery model. This incumbent focuses on the CI Housing meal program by planning, preparing and organizing daily community meals and/or developing individual food programs based on individual needs. The Peer Food Services Worker will ensure that meals provided reflect relevant nutritional best practice guidelines. Working collaboratively with individuals, team members and community stakeholders the incumbent will lead by championing the community meal programs/food literacy of the community and work alongside individuals building knowledge, skills, and confidence. All services are provided in accordance with the mission and established protocols of the Agency and the principles of psychosocial rehabilitation.

This position is FLS Designated

As such, the Peer Food Services Worker for French Language Services is responsible for providing services to clients in English and French and works collaboratively within the team on supporting French-speaking clients outside of their assigned case load. The incumbent may also be asked to support French-speaking clients of other programs of the agency as required. Travel may be required to all KFL&A sites.

Note: If the competition is unsuccessful for a French Language Services individual, internal applicants without proficiency in French language will be considered at that time. As such, all applicants are invited to apply.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Oral French Language proficiency at the Advanced level, in accordance with the provincial standard. Documentation of proficiency and/or additional third-party testing/assessment is required.
  • Minimum of 1-year Diploma in the area of food services.
  • Two years of relevant food services experience required.
  • Paid or volunteer experience working with individuals who live with a serious mental illness, dual diagnosis or concurrent disorder, preferably in a community setting.
  • Experience as a recipient of mental health services for serious mental illness, dual diagnosis, or concurrent disorder.
  • Safe Food Handlers Certification.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR an asset.
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training an asset.
  • Crisis Prevention & Intervention Training an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of food preparation techniques, methods, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of nutrition.
  • Basic understanding of chemical dependency and its impact on the health and nutritional needs of individuals who live with a serious mental illness, dual diagnosis or concurrent disorder.
  • Ability to utilize own personal, practical experience, self-knowledge and first-hand insight to benefit clients and team members.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply Psychosocial Rehabilitation principles.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the principles of recovery.
  • Ability to effectively utilize community resources and supports to meet the needs of clients.
  • Ability to work under pressure within a changing environment.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in order to establish rapport with persons living with a serious mental illness.
  • Well-developed problem-solving, prioritization and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Basic proficiency in computer skills including the use of MS Office.
  • Ability to work days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License and have regular access to a reliable vehicle and provide proof of $2,000,000 vehicle insurance. Incumbent may be required to transport clients.
  • Required to provide a satisfactory criminal reference check (CRC) with Vulnerable Sector Screening prior to hire.
