Job description

Do you want to join a team of passionate payroll professionals dedicated to excellence?

Then Jobber might be the place for you! We’re looking for a Payroll Manager to be part of our Finance and Operations department.

Jobber exists to help people in small businesses be successful. We work with small home service businesses, like your local plumbers, painters, and landscapers, to transform the way service is delivered through technology. With Jobber they can quote, schedule, invoice, and collect payments from their customers while providing an easy and professional customer experience. Running a small business today isn’t like it used to be—the way we consume and deliver service is changing rapidly, technology is evolving, and customers expect more. That’s why we put the power and flexibility in their hands to run their businesses how, where, and when they want!

Our culture of transparency, inclusivity, collaboration, and innovation has been recognized by Great Place to Work, Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures, and more. Jobber has also been named on the Globe and Mail’s Canada’s Top Growing Companies list, and Deloitte Canada’s Technology Fast 50, Enterprise Fast 15, and Technology Fast 500 lists. With an Executive team that has over thirty years of industry experience of leading the way, we’ve come a long way from our first customer in 2011—but we’ve just scratched the surface of what we want to accomplish for our customers.

The team:

The Finance team at Jobber is responsible for anything money related to better help plan, budget, and implement Jobber’s best ideas. Within the Finance Team, the Payroll Team has a passion for providing quality service to all Jobber employees who entrust us with their pay so they can stay focused on our mission to help small businesses be successful.

The role:

Reporting to our Director, Accounting, the Payroll Manager is an integral role within the payroll team at Jobber. You’ll manage the end-to-end payroll process, ensuring timely and accurate processing of our payroll and benefits. This is a key role in ensuring compliance with payroll regulations and tax laws while providing exceptional service to our employees. While the day to day of the role should be second nature to you and you can hit the ground running, you’re excited about leveraging your experience to recommend improvements as we continue to scale. You will collaborate closely within the Payroll, Accounting, and People teams.

This role is an 18-month maternity leave contract, offering a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact within our team during this period.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee and lead the payroll processing on a bimonthly basis. As we continue to grow, you’ll conduct routine audits and reviews to ensure payroll batches are processed in a timely, efficient and effective manner with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ensure compliance with payroll standards. You’ll be responsible for maintaining our payroll compliance including meeting deadlines for issuing T4s/W2s, payroll tax filings, and other worker’s compensation reporting.
  • Support the sales commissions process. You’ll work closely with both the sales and accounting teams to ensure that commissions are calculated and paid accurately.
  • Research and find new opportunities. Whether it’s researching the rules around taxable benefits associated with new Jobber perks, entering a new payroll jurisdiction or making recommendations for new software we should be using, you’ll stay on top of new information and changes that could benefit your team.
  • Support company wide initiatives. You’ll work closely with our People team to help in implementing Jobber’s greatest ideas and initiatives.
  • Support a team of payroll professionals, coaching and mentoring staff to elevate and improve their skill set. You’ll be the first point of contact for our junior team members when it comes to questions about their assigned tasks.

To be successful, you should have:

  • Demonstrated experience in issuing and administration in Canadian payroll. Bonus points if you have experience with US payroll and/or a payroll designation, but not a deal-breaker.
  • Eyes for the details. Dealing with people’s pay is important, so your attention to detail when dealing with the dollars and cents is crucial.
  • A high level of trustworthiness. You’re dealing with sensitive information day in and day out, so having a high degree of ethics is needed.
  • The ability to collaborate and communicate. You’ll be working with members of our Accounting, Finance, and People teams on a regular basis, so you’re open to learning, communicating, and providing feedback on workflows to make sure we’re running smoothly. You’ll also be the most company facing role of the Accounting team, so the ability to communicate with ease the payroll process to employees should give you a level of excitement.
  • A comfort with technology. Not only do we use multiple different systems here (ADP, Gusto, Shareworks, etc), while working on Macbooks, we’re also looking at implementing new technology on the team, so being able to learn new systems quickly will be a big part of the role.
  • An incrediblepassion for our customer and a connection to our purpose - to help small businesses be more successful.
