Field Effect is looking for a Paralegal/Law Clerk to provide legal assistance in a variety of areas, including Patents and Trademarks, Corporate, and ready to grow and tackle contracts management.
As our Paralegal/Law Clerk, you will play a pivotal role in keeping our legal operations airtight, supporting innovation, and protecting our intellectual property. Your key responsibilities will include:
Intellectual Property (IP) Management:
- Ensure our IP portfolio is in line with the company’s overall IP strategy
- Oversee the filing, tracking, and renewal of patents, trademarks, and copyrights.
- Work with our external counsel to guide patents and trademarks through the various stages to registration
- Coordinate with external legal counsel and relevant internal stakeholders.
Corporate:- Oversee corporate recordkeeping for our entities in Canada, US, UK and Australia
- Prepare annual resolutions and others as required
- Minute book administration, including updating registers and ledgers, as required
- Manage annual filings
Document Control & Organization:- Maintain and organize legal documentation, including IP portfolios and related correspondence.
- Establish and manage the implementation of contracts record management systems
Legal Research & Compliance Monitoring:- Stay updated on IP law trends and assist in advising on risk management strategies.
- Research IP-related queries to ensure alignment with corporate goals.
- Research corporate regulatory requirements in the jurisdictions where we have offices
- Ensure organizational adherence to relevant laws, regulations, and company policies.
- Assist with audits and compliance reporting.
Administrative Support:- Contract proofreading and assist in reviewing contracts in line with the company’s risk profile.
- Maintain the legal files and ensure contracts, both sales and supplier are filed and accessible.
- Organizing, labeling and filing of electronic files in accordance with established saving and naming protocols.
- Manage invoices and expenses related to external counsel and legal operations.
- Track and monitor legal budgets, ensuring cost-effectiveness.
Experience & skills we look for:- Relevant post-secondary education in Law Clerk studies, Paralegal Studies, or a similar field
- 4 to 7 years of experience as law clerk or similar role in a corporate in-house, law firm, or similar environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Knowledge of patent, trademark, and copyright processes
- Knowledge of Canadian corporate recordkeeping requirements
- Previous exposure and some experience in contracting processes is a plus
- Strong ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion
- Please note that this is a hybrid role and requires the person to be on site 2 times per week
