The Infrastructure Department is looking to hire a full-time Operator with a can-do attitude to join their Parks team. Reporting to the Team Lead, Parks, the Operator is responsible for maintaining municipal assets and infrastructure including parks, trails, drainage systems, cemetery, and more. The individual we’re seeking is service-focused, has excellent communication skills, and always has safety top-of-mind.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Operate and maintain various vehicles and equipment, including trucks, mowers, skid steers, tractors, and specialized tools like chainsaws and pesticide sprayers.
  • Perform landscaping and horticulture tasks, including mowing, trimming, planting, and weed control.
  • Repair and maintain park amenities, playground equipment, and signage.
  • Inspect and ensure safety across playgrounds, sports fields, and recreational spaces.
  • Prepare for seasonal operations, including trail clearing, equipment maintenance, and ice surface creation.
  • Conduct snow and ice removal from public areas.
  • Collaborate with the fleet team on equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Use software tools to track maintenance and inspection activities.
  • Assist with internal and external events, including setup, maintenance, and support for user groups and tournaments.
  • Coordinate with recreation staff regarding field conditions, event bookings, and special requests.
  • Respond to inquiries and provide courteous assistance to residents and user groups.
  • Adhere to health and safety protocols, including hazard assessments, inspections, and documentation.
  • Train staff on equipment operation, safety practices, and technology tools.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and respond to emergencies as required.
  • Assist other service areas when needed and perform other duties as assigned.
What You Bring:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 3 plus years related work experience.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Proficient computer/tablet skills and familiar with app-based work management processes.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable safety-related legislation, regulations, guidelines, standards, and best practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Assets:
  • Valid Class 3 driver’s license with Q endorsement.
  • Complementary certifications related to the job duties, such as: Arboriculture Technician Certificate/ISA certification, Landscaper Gardener Certification, Pesticide Applicators License, Turf Management Certificate, Sports field Level 1 & 2 Certificate.
  • Applicable training: small engine mechanics training, chainsaw operations, ground worker operations, tree hazard assessment, tree felling, tree pest and disease management, ropes/knots/rigging, bolting and cabling, pruning, barricading, flagman, fall protection, electrical awareness, and WHMIS.
As the successful candidate, you will have the ability to:
  • Meet the shift requirements, participate in on-call rotation and respond to emergencies as required (weekend work is required).
  • Meet the physical requirements, including lifting heavy equipment and materials up to 23 kilograms (50 lbs.), adhering to long periods of standing and sitting, working in all weather conditions, etc.
  • Provide a clean criminal record check.
  • Provide a driver’s abstract that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behavior.
  • Adhere to all safety standards and promote the organization’s health and safety program.
  • Keep detailed, accurate records in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Work and communicate effectively with the Operations team, management, other city departments, and residents.

  • A salary range of $64,771.20 - $84,531.20 per annum (based on experience and qualifications).
  • 40-hour work week (some evening and weekend work will be required).
