Operations Manager
About Mawi’Art: Wabanaki Artist Collective
Mawi’Art is the only Indigenous-led pan-Atlantic organization supporting development of the Indigenous arts sector in Atlantic Canada.
Our Vision is to see Indigenous Artists living in the Atlantic Canada, which is within the traditional territories of the Wabanaki, Inuit, and Innu Peoples, recognized and sought out for their outstanding contributions through contemporary and traditional art forms.
Our Mission is to provide Indigenous Artists with advocacy, community, and resources to succeed.
Art is a natural invitation to cross-cultural connection, learning, and healing. Underpinning Mawi’Art’s activities is the concept of Etuaptmumk, or “two-eyed seeing.” This term was developed by Elder Albert Marshall of Eskasoni First Nation; Etuaptmumk allows Mawi’Art to utilize the strengths of both Indigenous and western ways of knowing to carry out our work in a good way.

The Opportunity
The Operations Manager (OM) reports to Mawi’Art’s Executive Director and oversees the organization’s ongoing operations and procedures. Working closely with the Executive Director (ED), this person will provide leadership, management and vision to ensure the organization has the proper operational controls and procedures in place to effectively grow the organization and to ensure financial strength and operating efficiency. The OM will assist the ED in planning, organizing, directing and managing the operations of Mawi’Art.
Responsibilities
Ensure that confidentiality is respected and maintained at all times. Practice and uphold a safe and respectful workplace.
Leadership & Management
- Implement, manage and evaluate operational processes and procedures, in accordance with the standards and procedures set out by the organization.
- Work with the ED to develop and implement new business strategies for creating or improving processes and procedures.
- Oversee programs, initiatives, and processes to support and elevate Indigenous artists and Indigenous art.
- Demonstrate visible leadership to employees to encourage maximum performance and dedication.
- Establish and foster an environment that stimulates good communications, teamwork and creativity in both problem-solving and identification of opportunities.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with artist members, community partners, and external partnerships.
Operations Management
- Oversee and plan the daily operations and provide leadership for the overall operating performance of the organization.
- Build and maintain operating standards and practices that are responsive and adaptable to evolving organizational needs.
- Manage procurement processes and coordinate material and resource allocation.
- Oversee operational standards and implement quality assurance checks for all aspects of operations.
- Drive process improvements and act as change agent as necessary to implement operational best practices.
- Oversee, manage and collaborate with Mawi’Art staff the coordination of programs, projects, events and social enterprises within organization.
- Ensure Mawi’Art’s programs and projects reflect our mission and the philosophy of Etuaptmumk.
- Resolve programming problems or issues as they arise in collaboration with staff and the ED.
- Encompass the vision, mission, and values of the organization in all communications, operations, and outreach.
- Participate in internal and external communications and outreach, as required.
Financial and Human Resource Management
- Assist the ED in meeting financial objectives, preparation and management of the annual budget.
- Maintain staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
- Supervise staff from different departments and provide constructive feedback.
- Develop, analyze, evaluate and interpret quarterly and annual reports to enable the organization to leverage current funding opportunities and find new funding opportunities.
- Ensure corporate policy and regulatory initiatives are consistently applied.
- Maintain, monitor and develop HR policies, procedures, job descriptions, handbook, orientation plans, etc. that reflect the culture of the organization.
- Develop and incorporate into a daily management cadence, key performance indicators and accountability measures for the team.
- Actively promote the health and safety of all personnel as the highest priority without compromise.
- Actively promote and participate in regular team meetings.
- Ensure Mawi’Art employees have access to professional development within financial capacity, in accordance with the needs of their positions and any employment equity goals set by the Board of Directors.
- Collaborate with the ED to ensure compliance with city bylaws, fire regulations, and other legislated requirements as may affect the operations of Mawi’Art.
- Ensure that insurance requirements are met - vehicle, Board of Directors, building contents and liability, criminal record checks, etc.
- Communicate office closures to staff related to inclement weather or other issues that prevent regular building/office hours.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance or related field with a minimum of 5 years of senior management and/or operations experience. An acceptable equivalent combination of education, training and experience may also be considered.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills combined with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with a wide range of partners.
- Experience working with Indigenous people and a demonstrated understanding of their unique experiences, in particular, the experiences of Indigenous people living in the Atlantic Region.
- Excellent interpersonal and management skills, including demonstrated ability to lead and motivate staff, problem solve, delegate, coach, and resolve conflict.
- Ability to think strategically, plan, organize and execute effectively.
- Ability to lead, direct and manage complex programs, initiatives and projects with multiple outcomes.
- Excel at delegating tasks and should demonstrate exceptional communication skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to be proactive and demonstrate initiative.
- Familiarity with MS Office and various business software.
- Thrive in a constantly changing, fast-paced and deadline-driven grant-based environment.
- Demonstrate a high level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency.
- Strong literacy, numeracy skills and basic accounting experience.
- Valid drivers license (Class 4 would be an asset, along with a reliable vehicle).
- First Aid & CPR certification.
