Job description

The Heating and Power Service Mechanic is responsible for maintenance and operation of all mechanical systems including steam, chilled water, compressed air, HVAC equipment, purified water, and gas supply.

This position is deemed a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW). A Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW) is defined by the Nuclear Safety and Control Act as a person who is required, in the course of the person’s business, or occupation in connection with a nuclear substance or nuclear facility to perform duties in such circumstances that there is a reasonable probability that the person may receive a dose of radiation that is greater than the prescribed limit for the general public (1 mSv per year for the whole body).

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and develop test procedures and maintenance program for critical safety systems and control equipment to comply with regulations.
  • Operate computer controlled Building Management System to retrieve information as required.
  • Maintain and follow quality programs, systems, and procedures necessary to assure Nordion of ISO / GMP compliance.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on mechanical equipment and systems using up-to-date trade practices.
  • Monitor work activities in an effort to identify and implement any improvements that will provide improved service, functions or repair.
  • Adhere to all safety programs in place at Nordion.

Qualifications

  • Must have completed Grade 12 education.
  • Must be a certified Stationary Engineer.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of applicable work experience in building maintenance, manufacturing, or process industries.
  • Ontario Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Certificate and any of the other qualifications would be an asset.

Additional Requirements

  • Availability to work the required shift(s), overtime, and on-call.
  • Must be able to lift up to 10kgs on a frequent basis.
  • Climb ladders.
  • Wear a respirator for potentially several hours at a time.
  • Work in proximity to asbestos on a rare basis. This work is well controlled and strict work procedures / personal protective equipment are to be followed / used. As part of Nordion’s Asbestos Management Program, the candidate will be followed on a routine basis by the Occupational Health Physician.
  • Member of the Emergency Response team.

Training Required: Must complete all required training and certification as a Nuclear Energy Worker.
