Job description

The incumbent is responsible for coordination, development, delivery, supervision and monitoring comprehensive training activities for firefighters and other staff participating in training programs. Assists in providing public education, fire prevention and a wide range of administrative duties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, coordinate, deliver, monitor, and schedule comprehensive training programs in compliance with all relevant legislative and safety standards.
  • Attend emergency incidents, as required, to assess training needs and make recommendations to improve safety methods and efficiency.
  • Maintain training records and prepare reports on activities.
  • Provide input into the department’s safety standards, policies, procedures, practices, and bylaws.
  • Prepares and evaluates tenders, quotations, proposal calls, reports, and awards or recommends awards in accordance with the City's Purchasing Policy.
  • Prepares and monitors (controls), under the direction of the Chief, Fire, the Fire training programs annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Ensures, so far as is reasonably practicable, that reporting staff follow established safety procedures and standards.
  • Act as Fire Chief and other staff positions as assigned.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

Working Conditions:

Considerable work is performed under normal office conditions. Responds to emergency situations, many that occur outside of normal working hours. Exposure to health hazards, smoke / fumes, chemicals, temperature extremes and noise in firefighting and emergency situations.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Five years' previous related firefighting experience including Instructor training and 6 months on-the-job training.
  • Fire Fighter NFPA 1001 Certification Level I and II.
  • Incident Command System Level 300.
  • Incident Safety Officer.
  • Class 3 Driver's license & Air Brake Endorsement.
  • Standard First Aid, CPR level C and oxygen therapy.
  • Effective public relations and public speaking skills.
  • Proven leadership, organizational and prioritizing skills.
  • Work effectively independently or in a team environment.

Additional certifications required include but not limited to:

  • Defensive Driving & Hazard Avoidance; Wildland firefighting basics; HAZMAT Operations Level, Aerial Ladder Operations, etc.

Examples of Required Equipment to Operate:

All fire apparatus, fire rescue and related equipment but not limited to pumper, tanker, rescue vehicle, automobile extraction tools, wildlife firefighter and technical rescue equipment.
