Job description

Position : Occupational Therapist

Location : Area 5 – Norway House, Manitoba

Start Date : September 3, 2024

FTE : .50 FTE

Term of Employment : Permanent

Reporting to the Area Superintendent, the Occupational Therapist works collaboratively with school teams and parents / guardians to support students with physical, developmental and learning needs through assessment, programming, therapeutic intervention, and consultative services to enhance access to academics and participation in school.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Masters’ in Occupational Therapy degree or an equivalent degree
  2. Eligibility to acquire a Permanent School Clinician’s Certificate
  3. Licensed or provisional member of the College of Occupational Therapists of Manitoba (COTM)
  4. Experience in Augmentative Communications would be an asset
  5. Strong written and verbal communication skills, effective organizational and computer skills; and the ability to meet multiple deadlines
  6. Experience working with Indigenous communities and using culturally affirming approaches preferred
  7. Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  8. Valid Manitoba Driver’s license and ability to travel

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will provide a broad range of occupational therapy services including but not limited to:

  1. Assist school resource personnel in identifying students with concerns related to fine motor skills, sensory processing, self / co-regulation, behaviour, environmental accessibility, self-care skills, etc.
  2. Function as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and participate in student specific planning (SSP) meetings of those students on the occupational therapy caseload as needed
  3. Maintain a liaison with school personnel, parents / caregivers, local childcare agency, health center / nursing station, and representatives from other professional support organizations / agencies who may be involved in specific cases
  4. Conduct assessments for the purposes of identifying strengths and challenges in school participation in accordance with Division referral policies
  5. Determine individualized intervention goals and establish strategies and techniques to facilitate development of the targeted skills
  6. Provide supervision and / or training and support to educational assistants when necessary
  7. Assist in the transitioning of students to ongoing services when necessary
  8. Ensure that proper case records, assessment reports, statistical records and all other pertinent data to each case is maintained and remains confidential
