McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH) is part of the Hamilton Health Sciences' family of hospitals. MCH provides acute tertiary care to children up to their 18th birthday. The Pediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU) is a 12 bed L3 and 4 bed L2 unit providing critical care to infants and children. The unit provides specialized care to complex, surgical, oncology, orthopedic, trauma and medical patient populations utilizing an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach.

The Pediatric Surgical Inpatient Unit provides acute tertiary and sub-specialty Surgical and GI care. This dynamic fast-paced multidisciplinary acute care unit specializes in pre-operative and post-operative surgical care. The Pediatric Surgical Specialty includes the services of General Surgery, Trauma, Head Injury (ABI), Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Spina Bifida, Urology, and the Ear, Nose, and Throat. Care is delivered to children in a family-centered environment. The role also includes cross coverage for other units and Ambulatory clinics within McMaster Children’s Hospital as needed.

Position Summary:

The Occupational Therapist (OT) will apply their clinical expertise of pediatric disease processes and related complex medical conditions. The OT will work with the interdisciplinary team to support and promote quality comprehensive care and follow-up to children to maximize their occupational performance (self-care, productivity and leisure) in order to facilitate discharge, community integration and functional adaptation. As a member of the multidisciplinary health care team, this role entails close liaison and communication with team members in both the PCCU and Pediatric Surgical Inpatient unit, including the facilitation and coordination of community services and supports.

Schedule Work Hours:

Monday to Friday; days (some flexibility for some evening work). This position is temporary until April 7, 2026. The first six (6) months will support the Pediatric Surgical Inpatient Unit and the next 12 months will support the Pediatric Critical Care Unit.

Qualifications:

  • Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
  • Relevant experience, knowledge, and clinical skills in the provision of evidence-based occupational therapy practice in the management of infants, children, adolescents (and their families)
  • Minimum of three (3) years recent, relevant clinical experience in a tertiary pediatric ambulatory setting
  • Demonstrated experience with assessment, evaluation and treatment with pediatric surgical patients
  • Experience with pediatric feeding and swallowing assessment and treatment preferred.
  • Well-developed knowledge of the role of occupational therapy services, and other disciplines along the continuum of care
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant community services and children’s treatment facilities
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Self-directed and flexible practitioner with well-developed critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage a caseload of patients to ensure optimal patient care and access to service.
  • Commitment to quality improvement identification and implementation
