Reporting to the Director, Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness (OHSW), the Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) is an experienced Occupational Health Nurse who is responsible for the delivery of effective and efficient occupational health services within the OHSW departments across Providence Care, with the goal of promoting a healthy and safe workplace, reducing disability (sick) and workplace injury claims, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements, and facilitating employees getting the assistance they need to maximize their full ability within the workplace.


Skills And Qualifications Required

  • Current, unrestricted RN registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of recent experience working as an Occupational Health Nurse, preferably in a unionized workplace, OR equivalent experience that, at a minimum, has involved managing illness/injury/absence claims in the workplace, facilitating return to work and workplace accommodation, and conducting communicable disease surveillance including administering vaccinations, assessing exposures to potentially infectious agents, and conducting contract tracing, etc. Delivering Occupational Health Nursing Diploma or Certificate preferred; must be willing to obtain within a determined time period, to fulfill the position
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse designation (COHN-C) preferred;
  • Disability Management certificate or NIDMAR certification (CDMP or CRTWC), or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred

Position Responsibilities

  • Provides clinical expertise to the Providence Care RTW Specialists to optimize the management of disability/sick claims; where additional clarification or medical information is required, prepares or reviews letters drafted by other OHSW staff, to treating physicians/Health Care Practitioners.
  • Assesses eligibility for sick benefits in accordance with sick leave criteria (e.g. HOODIP) as required (e.g. short term infectious illness, upon request by management) and makes decisions around eligibility for absences to count towards exclusion from attendance management.
  • Applies clinical expertise and case management experience and knowledge to serve as a resource to OHSW staff, HR, and/or Management on difficult/complex or contentious situations that involve a staff health/safety component (e.g. denial of sick benefits, high absenteeism, substance use issues, accommodation requests/strategies, performance issues possibly related to health or disability, grievances/arbitrations etc.).
  • Assesses requests for workplace accommodation due to disability; applies clinical expertise, knowledge of the workplace/job demands, and any related workplace issues, to prepare letters to health care practitioners to obtain additional information/clarification for the purpose of understanding employee needs/fitness to work and ensuring accommodation is medically indicated; works in collaboration with the employee, their manager, and other stakeholders to propose and facilitate accommodation strategies that balance the needs of the employee with that of the employer. Sits on the organization’s Accommodation Committee.
  • Follows established infectious disease protocols (e.g. infection control standards, OMA/OHA Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols) and maintains a communicable disease surveillance program for persons carrying on activities in the hospital to reduce the risk of exposure and infectious illness.
  • Develops and implements policies and processes to minimize the risk of injury/illness/exposure and determine appropriate education/communication channels to promote and ensure staff and management awareness.
