Responsibilities

The Occupational Health and Safety Technologist will report to the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Architecture. The incumbent will help to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) guidelines and will work with faculty, staff, students and others within the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Architecture to establish a workplace that meets legislative, regulatory, and University standards and fosters a culture of prioritizing health, safety and well-being. The Technologist will liaise with the Manager of Health and Safety and the Manager of Risk and Insurance in developing a safe and progressive work environment across the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Architecture.


  • Develops and implements lab safety programs, maintains systems, and provides expert advice and response for laboratory users within the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Architecture;
  • Conducts inspections of laboratories and facilities to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements; provides support to correct deficiencies, in some cases may recommend immediate action, and follows-up to ensure implementation;
  • Manages and coordinates a chemical inventory program for the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Architecture;
  • Suggests recommendations on the plan, design, and renovation of labs when required;
  • Collaborates with the Manager of Health and Safety to create and deliver health and safety training programming with a specific focus on lab safety;
  • Facilitates the Universities hazardous waste disposal program. Collects and sorts chemicals according to regulations, prepares lab packs for shipping, schedules pickups and orders consumables. Provides expert advice to Faculty, Staff and Students related to lab safety and hazardous waste disposal;
  • Provides support to ensure compliance with the transportation of dangerous and controlled substances, as required;
  • Assists in the coordination of response to emergency situations involving hazardous materials and/or lab equipment, advising laboratory staff and assisting with the coordination of spill clean-up where needed;
  • Maintains current records of training profiles of completion, competency and compliance with safety policies. Prepares reports as needed;
  • Participates in relevant equipment and system testing, committees, programs and initiatives; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • BSc. or MSc. Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or a comparable field is required;
  • Five (5) years of related experience is preferred;
  • Certification in WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, First Aid, CPR and AED as well as Laboratory Safety or willingness to be trained;
  • Demonstrated ability in researching, developing, and implementing policies or programs;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable legislation including the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • Membership of the Association for Canadian Registered Safety Professionals Certification, or intention to work toward certification, is considered an asset;
  • Strong communication, decision making skills and possesses good judgement;
  • Excellent presentation, facilitation, and public speaking skills;
  • Demonstrated highly effective interpersonal and conflict resolution skills with experience in handling contentious matters with sensitivity, confidentiality, and balance;
  • Proven problem recognition and solving abilities;
  • Superior attention to detail;
  • Excellent time-management skills;
  • Ability to work unsupervised and as part of a team;
  • Strong understanding of technology for collaboration; strong computer skills, including Microsoft applications; G-suite preferred; and
  • Ability to work fluently (verbal and written) in both official languages, French and English, is required.

THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED AS ONE THAT MAY REQUIRE A DIFFERENT WORK WEEK AND/OR HOURS OF WORK.


The current Schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (summer hours), or Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (winter hours). Upon four weeks’ notice, the work week and/or hours of work may be changed. (This may include evening and/or weekend shifts.)
