REMCAN is currently looking for a full-time Occupational Health and Safety Supervisor based in Eastern Canada.
The primary role of the OH&S Supervisor is to lead the Health & Safety team, its Officers, and Administrative staff to safety excellence in the railway field. The position reports directly to Director, Heath & Safety and VP of Occupational Health & Safety.
Who we are looking for:
The OH&S Supervisor identifies workplace hazards and trends on a corporate basis. This role is also key in interpreting and applying safety acts and regulations, setting the standards for workplace safety including policies and procedures and developing all safety related programs for various REMCAN shops, offices, and worksites.
This role will require 40% travel between sites mainly based in Eastern Canada but may include other Provinces. Travel arrangements & accommodations will be provided by the company.
Role & Responsibilities:
- Investigate injuries resulting from accidents from a safety perspective, recommend corrective action such as additional training or changes to policies and procedures
- Act as the Corporate Safety representative at meetings with our clients and Health & Safety Committee
- Conduct safety meetings with Operations Staff to review compliance and near misses with
- Prepare & administer Compliance Audits (minimum of 20 per month)
- Develop Corporate training initiatives and organize training for Safety Officers and Health & Safety Committee
- Initiate, develop & implement Safety & Compliance programs for each company position
- Support Supervisor Training to identify training needs, develop and execute improvement plans
- Compile reports and executive summaries for field accidents, injuries, vehicular damage, and ergonomic related issues for both general office or shop areas and operation of heavy equipment in the field
- Administer internal auditing process to ensure “At Risk” employees or trends are identified
- Participate in the administration of REMCAN’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Plan
- Maintain current provincial safety regulations, implementing necessary changes
- Research environmental regulations and policies and institute changes to ensure compliance with provincial standards
- Work with other members of the Safety & Compliance Team to develop robust cross- training
- Participate in and conduct new hire interviews as required
- Attend and actively participate in weekly operations meetings/calls
Field Responsibilities:
- Ensure all safety designations required by specific clients are being met
- Ensure all field employees are certified to perform job tasks safely and properly and qualifications are maintained as per company standards
- Assist with critical risk management and related risk assessment processes
- Focus on Field operations, providing coaching and mentoring to create a continuous environment of Safety First
- Conduct field safety meetings and site visits as required to promote education
- Raise awareness regarding safety aspects throughout the company by communicating with Managers and Superintendents concerning safety issues, reporting on a weekly basis
- Internal and external reporting of H&S incidents (ie. Provincial regulators, WCB / WSIB)
- Improve and build field workplace inspection documents for job sites and heavy equipment
- Implement and monitor progress towards REMCAN’s workplace safety plan(s)
- Conduct on-site safety inspections
- Assist with the management of employee on return-to-work programs or modified duties
- Maintain safety manuals, documentation, and systems (including implementation of same)
- Maintain all necessary requirements for COR certification
Required Skills:
- Highly focused, organized, detail-oriented and skilled at multi-tasking
- Adaptable, flexible with ability to navigate requirements between field and corporate mandates
- Excellent leadership, communication, and people skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Work under pressure and complete multiple tasks simultaneously
- Handle confidential and sensitive matters in an appropriate, discreet manner
- Excellent command of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Willingness to work overtime outside of regular business hours including rotation on-call requirements
- Flexibility to travel 30-40% of the year
Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a railway related field position – Engineering / Track Services is preferred
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a OH&S position with a heavy industrial company
- Occupational Health & Safety Diploma/Certification or relevant experience
- Good knowledge of WorkSafe Regulations and other legal responsibilities
- Additional OH&S training & knowledge are considered assets such as: (Incident Investigation, Fall Protection, First Aid, Confined Space, Train the Trainer, Supervisor Training, CSTS-09
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST)
- Joint Health and Safety Certification (preferred)
- First Aid certification S
- Experience in COR (managing from a field perspective and related audit process)
- Must hold a Class G License with a clean Driver’s abstract
