Position Summary
The Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Advisor is a key member of the Business Operations Team and plays an integral role in embedding a “safety first” mindset throughout the organization. The OH&S Advisor is committed to fostering a proactive safety culture that prioritizes the well-being of staff and aligns with the organization’s mission and values.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead comprehensive investigations of work-related injuries, near-misses, and property damage incidents, ensuring thorough documentation and analysis.
- Accurately classify incidents, perform detailed root cause analyses, and develop and implement effective corrective actions.
- Analyze safety data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement and conduct safety assessments to proactively engineer out potential risks, enhancing the overall safety of the workplace.
- Assist in the implementation and maintenance of COR certification.
- Maintain and continuously improve health and safety management systems.
- Recommend and develop safety procedures, policies, and programs to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Assist in conducting internal audits of safety controls and measures, including safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, eye wash stations, and the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) to ensure readiness for external audits.
- Conduct workplace inspections and assess work setups to ensure safety standards are met and enhanced.
- Support the implementation of HSE system requirements, actively participate in Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings, and coordinate emergency response planning.
- Deliver comprehensive HSE training programs, including new hire orientations and toolbox talks.
- Ensure all training programs comply with legislative requirements and align with internal standards.
- Advocate for safe work practices and lead initiatives focused on injury and fatality prevention.
- Cultivate and uphold leadership accountability, with a strategic vision to develop scalable and sustainable health and safety best practices.
- Collaborate closely with Learning and Development, Human Resources, Clinical, and Business Operations teams to ensure alignment and integration of safety initiatives.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
- A degree with a minimum of two (2) years of directly related experience, or a diploma with a minimum of four (4) years of directly related experience.
- A certificate in Occupational Health and Safety such as the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST), or certification through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), the Health and Safety Professionals Canada (HSPC), or the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) is considered a major asset.
- Internal COR Auditor certificate would be considered an asset.
Experience
- Knowledge of effective collaboration between unionized employees and management is an asset.
- Experience in implementing and maintaining COR certification.
- Experience in implementing changes to OHS programs and processes.
- Proven track record in developing and enhancing OHS programs.
- Strong understanding of enforcement and compliance procedures.
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and database management.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Capable of working independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Highly motivated, proactive, and demonstrates strong initiative.
- Effectively comprehends and communicates detailed instructions, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills and the ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.
- Possesses a solid understanding of The Workplace Safety and Health Act and related legislation.
Working Conditions
- Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.
- Ability to travel on public transportation or valid driver’s license with access to your own car in good repair is required.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- This position may be exposed to external environmental factors and weather conditions, and internal environmental factors such as offices and clinics.
