This is a Temporary Full Time Position for up to 6 months.

Sinai Health is looking for an experienced Nurse Practitioner to support our Special Pregnancy Program Maternal Infant Department at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus.

The Nurse Practitioner is a licensed professional, advanced practice nurse, who assumes responsibility and accountability for directing the health care of patients, emphasizing quality health promotion, disease prevention, and management. The NP will direct and provide patient care autonomously and in accordance with sound clinical judgment, within acceptable clinical guidelines per standards of practice, including the use of medical and clinical knowledge and expertise, technical skills, problem solving, oral communication, and documentation. The NP directs and supports others of the MFM clinical and nursing teams in the administration and management of patient care, in order to provide safe, therapeutic care for high-risk pregnant patients. The NP is expected to participate in quality improvement and research activities.

In this role you will:

  • Provide care within the Special Pregnancy Program, including performing intake medical histories, physical exams, assessment of pregnancy complications, and formulating a treatment plan in consultation with MFM specialists.
  • Ensure appropriate referrals are completed and implementation of the medical plan of care; educate patients and families on the normal course of pregnancy and the implications of their high-risk condition on their pregnancy course.
  • Provide care that reflects an evaluation of the psychosocial and counseling needs of the patient and family.
  • Provide family planning services to postpartum patients.
  • Support the clinical nurses with orders, interpreting test results, and communicating diagnoses or consultations to ensure they are practicing within their scope of practice.
  • Provide weekly care to patients staying in the hospitality program with consultation with the physician in charge (PIC) on the antenatal ward.
  • Provide care to antepartum and postpartum wound infections.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team in the establishment of goals and objectives for the program consistent with the provision of high-quality care.
  • Participate in the programmatic development of the clinical area and provide leadership in Nursing practice, program development, and evaluation.
  • Maintain patient safety as a priority by ensuring RNs practice within their scope and patient orders are completed to CPSO and CNO standards.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of standards of clinical practice through the creation of an environment conducive to growth and development of staff, excellence in clinical practice, and implementation and utilization of research.
  • Perform and participate in research activities and implement and advance changes in evidence-based practice.
  • Develop partnerships within the hospital and within the community, including identification of community resources and multi-cultural services to enhance continuity of care for clients.
  • Perform activities to further develop and strengthen the profession, including the supervision of advanced nursing students.
  • Act as a resource and serve as a consultant to individuals and groups within the professional community.

Job Requirements

Mandatory:

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class (Primary Health Care or Adult) and entitled to practice.
  • Successful completion of a Master's degree in nursing from a CNO accredited academic institution.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).
  • Eligible for cross-appointment to academic faculty.

Preferred:

  • Fetal heart surveillance certificate an asset.
  • Experience in obstetrics – antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum.
  • Practical skills in gynecological exams.
  • Experience in surgical wounds.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Good communication (written and verbal), leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work within multi-disciplinary teams.
