Demands, Duties, Qualifications:
This position works within the Nurse Practitioner's (NP) scope of practice in the following category of practice: Adult or Family/All Ages. This is an advanced practice role providing professional, analytical, and an autonomous comprehensive range of health services to patients including but not limited to health assessments and diagnosis of diseases, disorders, injuries, and conditions; treating and managing acute and chronic illnesses and identifying health risks and needs within a holistic model.
The NP Cardiovascular and Stroke Program provides comprehensive patient care in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary health team within the Cardiology Services. This includes performing comprehensive health assessments based on a thorough history, physical examination, and additional assessment strategies individualized to patient needs and practice setting; utilizing critical appraisal skills in decisions related to the use of clinical and diagnostic investigations, interventions, and the management of care including but not limited to addressing emergent clinical needs for patients; demonstrating evidence-based clinical decision-making through the critical examination and application of evidence from clinical research integrated with clinical expertise, patient input, family involvement, and existing resources; performing diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions; coordinating activities and functions regarding patient care, progress, and outcomes; exercising flexibility in clinical decision-making depending on need to negotiate with other healthcare provider(s) to determine a course of action in the absence of other resources or providers; and directing patient care to ensure continuity across the continuum. This NP also documents their discharge planning in accordance with the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) standards.
The NP Cardiac Care clarifies relevant research questions; collaborates, initiates, and disseminates research activities; provides leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based practice; and promotes the use of research to evaluate outcomes of care while acting as a leader, resource person, preceptor, and mentor for nurses, students, and other professionals. The incumbent must also be able to identify the need for change related to clinical, educational, or research issues in clinical practice and champion appropriate action.
Job Demands:

- Constantly moves, lifts, or operates equipment/machinery up to 10 lbs and regularly is required to lift/move equipment, books, and supplies.
- Occasionally, may have to reposition a patient over 50 lbs.
- Physical effort also includes regular sitting to conduct patient histories, performing work on the computer, and when assessing patients, regularly stands or walks.
- When performing procedures, regularly uses fine finger/precision work and hand tools (i.e. medical instruments, computer mouse, stethoscope, dopplers, etc.) requiring accurate control and steadiness.
- Visual concentration is required when performing physical assessments and procedures, completing charts/reports, observing patients, reading equipment/monitors, and completing work-related correspondence on the computer.
Job Qualifications:
- Completion of an approved/recognized Nurse Practitioner program is required.
- Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of NL (CRNNL) and Licensed (or eligible for licensure) as an Adult or Family/All Ages Nurse Practitioner with the CRNNL is required.
- A minimum of five years clinical experience within the last seven in Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, or Critical Care is required.
- Current and continuing BCLS Certification is required.
- Current and continuing ACLS Certification is required.
- Possess strong abilities in the areas of collaboration, clinical reasoning, professional development, interpersonal effectiveness, conflict management, and teamwork.
- Demonstrated progressive clinical leadership skills.
- Possess strong communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and teaching skills.
- Demonstrated ability to function autonomously in an advanced practice role.
- Support and participate in research to improve practice and client outcomes.
- Demonstrated skills in computer and database management.
- A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
