Job Overview

Responsible for supporting the underwriting team by reviewing all documentation to ensure they adhere to company and insurer policies and guidelines while focusing on service excellence. The Junior Underwriter is responsible for applying due diligence when reviewing required documentation to ensure accuracy and to protect the Company from risk while escalating any inaccuracies, issues, or items that are incomplete and potentially present risk to the Mortgage Underwriter and management whenever necessary. This role provides a fabulous opportunity to evolve into a mortgage underwriter. Except for the initial training period, this position is by and large a remote job that may require in-office attendance once or twice per month.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Be a key contributor to delivering an exceptional service experience when interfacing with brokers, clients, and any other valued stakeholder;
  2. Maintain minimum service level standards;
  3. Establish and maintain positive relationships with all external partners including but not limited to mortgage brokers, mortgage insurers, appraisers, title insurance companies, solicitors, etc.;
  4. Responsible for the collection of all required documents to satisfy mortgage loan conditions;
  5. Report any documentation concerns to the Underwriter and Manager (where necessary) for review and approval;
  6. Capture clear and concise notes within the loan underwriting system;
  7. Follow-up on outstanding conditions/documents as they relate to various conditions such as income, down payment, and the like;
  8. Maintain high standards of fulfilling obligations regarding AML/Compliance, Quality Assurance, and the like;
  9. Handle difficult interactions and unpopular decisions;
  10. Keep up-to-date with evolving policies and procedures;
  11. Perform other duties and assist with special projects, as required.

Qualifications

  1. Must have 2 years of previous residential mortgage application process experience (fulfillment, verification of varying documents, assessing client financial information, etc.);
  2. Detailed working knowledge of principles of credit analysis and risk management;
  3. Working knowledge of PC software in a Windows environment;
  4. Demonstrates the ability to make and document decisions that consider all implications and proactive management of risk;
  5. Demonstration of solid negotiation and problem-solving skills;
  6. Ability to adapt to changing volumes while maintaining turnaround time expectations;
  7. A very strong customer focus is required with an ability to ensure the customer experience is an exceptional one;
  8. Ability to work remotely while maintaining strong performance;
  9. Highly communicative and collaborative;
  10. View themselves as a key piece of the internal and external culture;
  11. An ability to make quick decisions without compromising quality;
  12. Undergraduate university degree is an asset;
  13. Ability to speak French is an asset.
