Location: 316 Spruce Street South, Timmins ON
Living Space is a low-barrier, non-profit emergency homelessness shelter offering 24/7 supports for those experiencing or at-risk of experiencing homelessness.
Position Summary:
The Monitor acts as the first point of contact for Clients and Visitors; ensuring the safety and security of the general public, Living Space Clients, staff, and property. Under the direction of the Operations Manager and Team Lead, the Monitor conducts one-on-one inspections (bag/pocket checks) with all Clients entering the building and performs routine patrols/inspections covering all areas of the property.
Requirements:
- Paid or unpaid experience working with vulnerable individuals.
- Familiarity with local Indigenous communities and organizations.
- Ability to speak multiple languages; including Cree will be considered an asset.
- 2 years Security or equivalent related experience preferred.
- Valid Security License with additional training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention / MORB (Managing of Resistive Behaviour) will be considered an asset.
- Any additional training certificates are considered an asset: CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute De-Escalation Skills), ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training).
- Willingness to work a variety of shifts when coverage is needed; days/evening/night. Ability to develop and maintain a dependable attendance pattern being on-time and present for the full duration of all shifts claimed.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality effectively with the ability to uphold professional and ethical boundaries.
- Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check is required.
- Living Space has a Vaccination Policy that requires employees to take part in COVID-19 vaccination programs recommended by Public Health.
Core Competencies:
- Experience working in a cross-cultural environment with a trauma-informed focus.
- Analytical thinking skills: Ability to make good decisions and solve/avoid problems as they arise.
- Enforcing laws, rules, and regulations with ethics and integrity.
- Communication: Front-line verbal communication with Clients, general public, emergency service providers. Documentation of incidents and daily reports.
- Crisis intervention skills: Ability to take charge in the event of an emergency. Ability to remain calm and flexible under stress in a high-energy, fast-paced work environment.
- Teamwork: Working with shelter staff under the direction of Team Lead.
- Demonstrated knowledge of issues related to poverty, homelessness, substance use, and mental illness.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in community settings with minimal supervision.
Specific Duties:
- Monitoring of vestibules and entrances, controlling Client access to the Drop-in and Emergency Overnight Shelter Programs.
- Maintaining awareness of your surroundings inside and outside the building, watching for high-tension situations by paying attention to body language and verbal cues.
- Conduct perimeter security patrols of the building and property.
- Enforce site rules and policies following established best practices.
- Teamwork focused, assisting in workplace tasks at the discretion of Team Lead.
Scheduling: Part-Time shifts are assigned based on business needs. Extra shifts are posted when available for employees to select which shifts they would like to work. Selected shifts are then approved/scheduled based on business needs. Part-Time Employees must have open availability to work a minimum of three shifts per week, to a maximum of 44 hours per week.

Salary: $22 per hour
Special consideration will be given to candidates who qualify for both Monitor and Shelter Relief Worker roles. A dual-contract including duties from both positions is possible.
