Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Manager, the MHSU Regional Practice Lead, Psychology, provides expertise, direction, and guidance related to clinical practice, education, program development, quality assurance, and quality improvement. Advances optimization of the MHSU System of Care in alignment with best practices through the assessment, development, provision, and evaluation of clinical and educational strategies that support and improve patient/client centered care and outcomes. Develops, implements, and evaluates guidelines, practice standards, and associated resources and instruments for achieving and maintaining professional standards throughout the continuum of health services as required by service area. Advises MHSU leaders and teams regarding MHSU clinical services.

Accountable to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019). Demonstrates leadership in advancing Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, In Plain Sight Recommendations, and other key reports to eliminate racism and improve cultural safety in MHSU services.

Travel may be a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Vancouver Island Health Authority in accordance with the service assignment and may require the use of a personal vehicle.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training And Experience

  • Ph.D. in Clinical or Counselling Psychology from a University or school recognized by the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia; and
  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience including a minimum of four (4) years within direct care and two (2) years in a leadership position; and
  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (CHCPBC);

An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

Skills And Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of psychology theory and practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to use adult education principles, methods, and tools to teach both individuals and groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement clinical practice standards (e.g. Policies, Procedures).
  • Comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated leadership of MHSU service systems including program planning and implementation, ongoing program quality assurance and improvement, and supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, utilize sound judgement, apply critical thinking, organize priorities, and foster team cultures aspiring to the highest quality of care.
  • Proven interpersonal skills including ability to facilitate collaboration across a wide range of people including patient partners, interdisciplinary team members, medical staff, senior leaders, corporate partners, and ministry designates.
  • Broad knowledge of relevant policies, procedures, regulations, and legislation.
  • Knowledge of research, monitoring, and evaluation methodologies as well as MHSU quality monitoring frameworks and data sets (e.g. CIHI).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage data and data sets, use of foundational statistical methodologies and present results (e.g. data visualization).
  • Demonstrated strong ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally including development of documents (e.g. Reports, SBARs) and presentation materials.
  • Demonstrated competence applying project and change management methodologies to achieve objectives.
  • Proficiency in the use of a range of technological software (e.g. PowerPoint, Word, Visio, Excel, SharePoint, databases). Working knowledge of analytical software (e.g. SPSS, Tableau).
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and development.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and supervise others.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position and operate related equipment.
