Position Details

  • Position Title: Mental Health Nurse
  • Department/Section: Paramedic Operations
  • Employment Status: Permanent Full Time
  • Targeted Salary Range: $39.07-$56.00 an hour
  • Location: Thunder Bay or based in the GTA with the ability to travel to Thunder Bay.
  • Hours of Work: This is a rotational position on a modified schedule: 14 days on shift (12 hours each day) followed by 14 days of rest.

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will function as part of a multi-disciplinary transport team to provide medical care for mental health patients in transport between facilities. The Mental Health Nurse is responsible for the initiation and provision of treatment, stabilization, and safe transport of urgent and non-urgent mental health patients via air or land, and the completion of relevant documentation.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide clinical care to mental health patients including stabilization, preparation for transport, and care during transport through to transfer of care at a receiving facility.
  • Maintain necessary clinical equipment, equipment bags, and biomedical equipment in a state of readiness for response.
  • Follow all routine and enhanced practices for infection prevention and control including post-call cleaning and disinfection of aircraft and equipment as required.
  • Complete paper-based and/or electronic documentation of patient care in accordance with the Standards of Practice of the Colleges of Nurses of Ontario and/or Ministry of Health.

Qualifications:

  • Current active registration in good standing, as Registered Nurse, with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Current active certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) for healthcare including AED.
  • Current active certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is an asset.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of practice in a hospital-based acute care mental health nursing setting.
  • Experience in an Emergency Room and/or Intensive Care Unit setting is an asset.
  • Experience using Medical Directives and/or Standing Orders while providing care with minimal supervision.
  • Experience providing care in remote indigenous communities is preferred.
  • Experience providing care in a transport environment (air ambulance or similar), either nationally or internationally is considered an asset.
  • Specialized training in mental health nursing/critical care/emergency nursing is considered an asset.
  • Specific designations related to areas of specialization i.e. CCRN is considered an asset.
  • Air Medical Transport training and/or certification i.e. CAMATA is considered an asset.
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention training/certification or similar is considered an asset.
