1-year Temporary Full-Time Contract (with the possibility of extension)

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) is the national voice for women’s health in Canada with a mission to lead the advancement of women’s health through excellence and collaborative professional practice.

The SOGC has over 4,000 members, comprised of: obstetricians; gynaecologists; family physicians; nurses; midwives and allied health professionals working in the field of sexual and reproductive health.

Since 1944, the SOGC continues to be a leading national and international authority on sexual and reproductive health and on evidence-based training and education. The SOGC leads the development of 12–17 clinical practice guidelines per year and hosts three regional continuing medical education meetings, and an Annual Clinical and Scientific Conference. The SOGC also coordinates and hosts in-person and virtual academic programs for participants at all stages of their career: medical students, residents and practicing health professionals.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the ALARM and OCR Manager, the Medical Writer is a key member of the Obstetrical Content Review (OCR) Committee and helps with the development process of the Advances in Labour and Risk Management (ALARM) and content.

The Medical Writer is responsible for the development and management of medical writing deliverables that support the Obstetrical Content Review Committee and works closely with each member of the Committee and the Research Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Writes, reviews and edits chapters related to ALARM content.
  2. Works with each member of the Obstetrical Content Review Committee and the Research Manager to facilitate the development and update of medical content.
  3. Attends the yearly OCR Committee Meeting and conducts a content review of all chapters.
  4. Works with graphic designer to create or update illustrations and algorithms.
  5. Requests and obtains permissions for images, tables etc. for reuse in the chapters.
  6. Updates the references in both the English and French chapters.
  7. Formats and finalizes the chapters for publication.
  8. Coordinates the timely translation of all documentation with the translation vendor.
  9. Manages the chapter update process and timeline to ensure that the documentation is completed on time to meet deadlines.
  10. Provides editorial and writing assistance to other SOGC departments.
  11. Ensures consistency across all documents.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE and KEY SKILLS

  1. College or University degree in a related discipline with 5 years’ experience.
  2. Proficiency with publishing software.
  3. Proficiency with a reference manager program (i.e., Endnote).
  4. Advanced knowledge of English grammar, syntax and usage.
  5. Strong scientific/medical writing skills and a firm understanding of medical terms evidenced by good quality writing of medical communications and/or publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  6. Adaptability to changing or evolving policies and priorities as well as the ability to meet tight deadlines.
  7. Ability to gather, understand, interpret, process and summarize complex information.
  8. Ability to navigate clinical literature, clinical protocols, clinical study reports, investigator brochures, publications and medical congress material.
  9. Ability to create effective presentations from raw data.
  10. Ability to work independently after receiving appropriate guidance.
  11. Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize, multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
  12. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a highly matrixed cross-functional team.
  13. Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.

ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

  1. Ability to work weekends and overtime.
  2. Some travel may be required.
