The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, the Medical Laboratory Technologist II performs duties in the provision of laboratory services for diagnostic purposes and to support clinical care, as well as academic and research needs. They work in conjunction with the Manager to implement and conduct the quality assurance program for the Microbiology Service within the IWK under the supervision of the Division Head, provide additional resource and equipment management, and oversee scheduling and daily operational guidance of the Microbiology laboratory. Other duties will include but are not limited to:

  1. Microbiology Specimen Processing
  2. Reading and Interpretation of Bacterial Cultures
  3. Susceptibility Testing
  4. Operation of Instrument Systems, e.g., Bactec, Microscan, DS2, ProbeTec, GeneXpert, BD Max
  5. Rapid Diagnostic Testing, e.g., Direct Antigen testing, Gram staining
  6. Serological/Immunological assays
  7. Mycology/Parasitology
  8. Quality Control
  9. Resource Management
  10. Compliance to various standards, e.g., Public Health Reporting Requirements, WHMIS, OHS

Hours of Work

Rotating days, evenings (to 7pm), weekends & holidays, standby and call-back.


Your Qualifications

  1. Registered Medical Laboratory Technologist (RT) or Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) with appropriate major required.
  2. Five (5) years related experience preferred.
  3. Recent experience reading/interpreting/reporting human clinical bacterial cultures required.
  4. Licensed or eligible for licensure with Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technology (NSCMLT) required.
  5. Certification or eligible for certification with Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) required.
  6. Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
  7. Demonstrates effective organizational, time management, and prioritization skills.
  8. Understands and has a proven ability in team-building dynamics/techniques.
  9. Demonstrates critical thinking in problem-solving.
  10. Candidates must demonstrate an ongoing commitment to technical expertise and professional development.
  11. Candidates must be able to work within a team, independently, and to take initiative when required.
  12. Competencies in other languages an asset.
