The salary range for this position is CAD $36.69/Hr. - CAD $45.81/Hr.

As a Lab Technologist at VCH you will:

  • Work in a team-based environment and under general supervision of the Diagnostic Services Manager or other designated personnel.
  • Perform a variety of routine and/or complex tests utilizing manual procedures and automated instruments within a designated laboratory area.
  • Be responsible for functions such as greeting patients, collecting and/or receiving specimens, validating and reporting test results, maintaining instruments, and preparing solutions and control agents in accordance with established procedures and safety standards.
  • Participate in departmental training programs in chemistry, hematology, and other related areas with a view to learning new/existing tests and procedures for use in the Laboratory.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Certified by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science and basic care training.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of laboratory procedures and techniques including quality control.
  • Basic knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care using point of care instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and Strengths-based care.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Skill in the operation of related equipment and in techniques appropriate to the designated areas of the laboratory.

The hours of work, including days off and work area, may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check. As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.
