- Certification: Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
- Experience in: Core Lab (New graduates with their CSMLS certification are welcome to apply!)
- Skills: Strong communication, adaptability, and a commitment to patient care excellence in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples in social and health contexts, including a clear understanding of and commitment to eradicate Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination and embed Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within Health Science Professionals contexts found in foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), and the Declaration Act Action Plan.
Core Competencies
- Brings an understanding of Indigenous-specific racism and the broader systemic racism that exists in the colonial health care structure, and has demonstrated initiatives in breaking down barriers and ensuring a safe environment ensuring a sense of belonging to all, informed by Indigenous Cultural Safety.
- Awareness of social, economic, political, and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism and foundational documents and legislative commitments (the Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
Skills & Knowledge
- Recent working knowledge of the assigned section or sections.
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures, and technical competence to perform tests used in the assigned section of the laboratory, including quality control and safety.
- Interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to organize and prioritize workload.
- Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
- Demonstrates a commitment to beginning and/or continuing their personal learning journey related to Indigenous-specific racism and dismantling systems of oppression.
- Demonstrates foundational knowledge of the social, economic, and political realities of settler-colonialism and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and equity-deserving groups within social and health contexts.
List of Duties
- Obtain laboratory samples from patients as required.
- Perform laboratory procedures and analyze results according to established policies.
- Prepare a variety of solutions, reagents, standards and controls for use in analysis, in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures.
- Respond to requests and inquiries for test results by various methods as required by the standard operating procedures.
- Communicate test results to the appropriate parties, including designated members of other health teams, by methods such as printing and distributing lab results.
- Perform routine instrument maintenance including the setup, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory instruments. Identify and report malfunctions in equipment.
- Assist in the evaluation of technical procedures and provide input in the development and maintenance of policies and procedures for assigned work area.
Hours/ Days of Work: 0700-1530, 0800-1630, 0930-1800, 1530-0000. You may sometimes be required to work after midnight depending on emergencies and the needs of the department. Site is opened from Sunday through Saturday.
Location: This position supports Vancouver Coastal Health and is located in qathet General Hospital in Powell River.
