Job Summary & Requirements

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As an integral member of the Laboratory team, the Medical Laboratory Technologist responsibilities include:

  1. Participating in technical, professional and quality in-services and education.
  2. Participating in staff and patient experience and feedback initiatives, professional development, teaching/educational activities, safety and quality improvement programs to ensure excellence in the provision of services.
  3. Reading and confirming understanding of laboratory policies and procedures through document control software.
  4. Forwarding suggestions for policy and procedure improvements or corrections required to the Charge or Team Leader.
  5. Performing laboratory procedures for specific discipline(s) and functions and ensuring the completion of assigned workload.
  6. Operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining cleanliness of laboratory equipment and work area; preparing written and electronic reports required to document procedures and test results; participating in teaching, educational, safety, and quality improvement programs.
  7. Observing and understanding hospital policies and procedures.
  8. Adhering to hospital and departmental mission and vision statements while maintaining patient confidentiality.
  9. Performing cross-functional duties, as assigned or requested.
  10. Performing other related duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned, requested, or required.

SUPERVISION/ DIRECTION GIVEN:

  1. Provides technical supervision for Medical Laboratory Assistants in the applicable area, ensuring work is completed in accordance with established policies and ACCREDITATION CANADA - DIAGNOSTICS requirements.
  2. Recommends and communicates changes to enhance the efficient and cost-effective operation of the laboratory.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY:

  1. Support Internal Responsibility System by administering RVH Health & Safety policies and procedures, the Ontario Health & Safety Act and regulations and WHMIS.
  2. Participate in Health & Safety training as required.
  3. Provide a safe working environment and ensure all equipment is evaluated, validated, and well maintained.
  4. Participate in Workplace Inspections and hazard identifications, accident/incident investigations; including analysis, risk assessment, and the implementation of corrective measures.
  5. Supports Laboratory Safety Representative to evaluate status and maintain full ACCREDITATION CANADA - DIAGNOSTICS safety compliance.
  6. Suggest Health & Safety items to be discussed at staff meetings.
  7. Complete Health & Safety education and training as required that includes job-specific training and safe work practices.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of Ontario Laboratory Accreditation program preferred.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of current technologies within the field.
  3. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and professionally with staff, physicians, volunteers, patient families, and visitors.
  4. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Demonstrated excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks at a time in a cost-effective manner.
  6. Demonstrated ability to perform duties independently and as a team member, with a high degree of motivation and independent judgment.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to excellent attendance and schedule flexibility.
  8. Demonstrated excellent conflict resolution and change management skills.
  9. Demonstrated strong critical thinking and problem-solving ability.
  10. Demonstrated proficiency with keyboarding, Laboratory Information Systems (Meditech preferred), MS Office, internet use, and other computer software.
  11. Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and performing mandatory reviews.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

  1. General certification in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized post-secondary institute.
  2. Certification through the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
  3. Registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologist of Ontario (CMLTO) in areas of responsibility required.

Experience

  1. Minimum one (1) year recent laboratory experience in related discipline(s), as required by assigned area, preferred.
  2. Demonstrated ability to develop skill and knowledge in required areas of the laboratory required.
  3. Experience with current instrumentation/automation in respective area an asset.
  4. General knowledge of all areas of the laboratory preferred.
  5. General knowledge of the theory and practices of applicable laboratory procedures and equipment required.
  6. Meditech and LIS knowledge and experience an asset.

PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATION:

  1. Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologist (CMLTO) in areas of responsibility required.
  2. Participation in professional committees, networks recommended.
