Job description
Summary Of Duties

The Medical Laboratory Assistant plays an integral role in the laboratory by providing support services to ensure quality patient care. This includes the following:

  1. Specimen handling - receiving, sorting, labelling and distributing specimens to work stations,
  2. Updating patient information, filing and retrieving records, verifying and registering patient demographics, answering phone calls
  3. Performing routine technical procedures
  4. Providing customer service assistance to address issues with patients, referring offices and internal departments
  5. Performing venipuncture and ECG on inpatients and outpatients
  6. Practicing and providing patient-centred care
  7. Facilitating procurement of miscellaneous specimens
  8. Arranging for the transport of the specimens to the laboratory
  9. Maintaining required inventory and forms, maintaining work areas
  10. Practicing in a safe manner, maintaining a safe working environment and complying with IP&C policies
  11. Collecting and documenting workload statistics and filing safety reports as required
  12. Collecting and organizing documents as required
  13. Participating in CQI initiatives and assisting in training of staff
  14. Participating in On-call duties
  15. Performing other duties as required

Qualifications/Skills

  1. Successful completion of Community College program for Medical Laboratory Technician (must include Phlebotomy and ECG)
  2. MLPAO (previously known as OSMT) certification required
  3. CSMLS MLA certification an asset
  4. Minimum one (1) year recent experience in venipuncture required
  5. Proficient computer skills required including MS OFFICE-EXCEL, Word
  6. Knowledge of registration of microbiology samples preferred
  7. Lab automation experience preferred
  8. Previous experience with Sunquest Laboratory Information System and electronic Positive Patient Identification (ePPID) such as Sunquest Collection Manager preferred
  9. Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to follow departmental procedures
  10. Ability to understand and apply information to new situations.
  11. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  12. Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively
  13. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member and adjust to varying work assignments as needed, or work independently, as required
  14. Ability to work safely and accurately in a fast paced environment and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner
  15. Demonstrated satisfactory work performance, punctuality and attendance records
