Position Description

The Medical Lab Technologist performs and is responsible for a variety of laboratory tests and procedures and acts in accordance with the mission, vision, values and goals of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) and those of the Hospital. They will support a 24 hour / 7 days a week operations working all shifts on a rotational basis including weekends and holidays as scheduled. The Medical Lab Technologist will work in the Clinical Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory within the Division of Pathology.

The Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at SickKids is a leading, world-class facility working towards reducing the impact of childhood illness by providing diagnostic information that allows for early selection of best treatment options. DPLM is a valuable and integral part of the SickKids team, generating original research and providing timely, specialized diagnostic services for health care providers in Canada and around the world. The department comprises of five divisions: Clinical Biochemistry, Genome Diagnostics, Haematopathology, Microbiology, and Pathology. All DPLM laboratories are accredited by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics.

The Division of Pathology and Clinical Molecular Diagnostics at the Hospital of Sick Children combines the analysis of cellular and molecular abnormalities underlying disease processes to deliver timely and life-changing diagnostic results. The Clinical Molecular Diagnostics lab is at the forefront of cancer diagnostics, employing advanced methods including next-generation sequencing and methylation arrays to identify genetic and epigenetic changes that drive patients' cancers. These tests are critical for providing accurate diagnoses and selection of the most effective treatments. Here Is What You Will Get To Do:

  • Perform analytical tests, assess, interpret and report results.
  • Prepare and issue samples/product/specimen.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and records of testing.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Practice and perform a variety of laboratory tests and procedures accurately and precisely within defined time expectations (TATs).
  • Recognize failure, troubleshoot, take remedial action, and document action, within their scope of practice, as required.
  • Report failures, issues & action taken to immediate supervisor.
  • Assess results against diagnosis to ensure relevant results correspond with known patient data, as appropriate.
  • Recognize abnormal and critical results, and take appropriate actions according to the established SOP, as required.
  • Provide training to technologists, students and clinical fellows.
  • Follow inventory control system and communicate status to ensure availability of adequate reagents and supplies.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and support of the policies, processes and procedures within the Quality System to support the effective operation of DPLM.
  • Follow health and safety procedures as per DPLM and Hospital guidelines.
  • Perform quality control and document control results.
  • Review and monitor daily QC results.
  • Recognize unusual quality control results, take remedial action and document outcome.
  • Report ongoing or unresolved QC issues to immediate supervisor.

Here Is What You Will Need

  • Bachelor of Science and/or diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology.
  • Bachelor of Science MLS is preferred.
  • Registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO).
  • Applicants for positions are required to produce a certificate of registration from the College of Medical Laboratory Technology of Ontario with endorsement in the disciplines of Molecular Genetics/ Cytogenetics.
  • Experience with clinical genetic technologies is an asset.
  • Experience with paediatrics is an asset.
  • Solid technical skills and theoretical knowledge within the specialty molecular genetics.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated customer service orientation and ability to relate well to others.
  • Strong organization skills and ability to work well under pressure and prioritize.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and adaptable to new technologies and processes.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to make decisions based on knowledge and experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives.
