Job Details

Position Title: Media Relations and External Communications Specialist

Status: FT Support

Hours: 40 hours per week

Department: Marketing and Communications

Campus/Location: North Campus

Salary: FT Support Payband I (Start $39.34 – Max $45.59)

About the Media Relations and External Communications Specialist Role

The Media Relations and External Communications Specialist is responsible for implementing strategic external communications that contribute to enrolment growth, raise awareness and enhance the image and reputation of Humber Polytechnic.

The Specialist will take a lead role in supporting and promoting Humber and its communications priorities, focusing on community-level public relations and issues management. Responsibilities include:

  1. Conducting media relations outreach and pitching stories according to institutional news and/or current events.
  2. Providing official comment on behalf of Humber in media interviews when assigned.
  3. Providing media and other support at events.
  4. Supporting critical incident and crisis communications.
  5. Conducting media monitoring and producing media coverage reports.
  6. Identifying and preparing internal spokespeople for media interviews.
  7. Developing the media strategy that guides Humber’s efforts to generate earned coverage and promote Faculty expertise.
  8. Creating and maintaining an editorial calendar tracking important dates/events related to potential outreach.
  9. Conducting outreach and providing information to external audiences as required.
  10. Conducting research and evaluation, and providing day-to-day support to the Marketing & Communications team as needed.

The Media Relations and External Communications Specialist reports to the Manager of PR and Communications.

Minimum Requirements

Education:

  • 3-year diploma or degree in English or communications-related fields such as journalism, public relations, mass communications or media communications.

Experience/Skills:

  • A minimum of five years professional public relations, media relations.
  • Demonstrated success working as a communications/public relations/media relations/journalism practitioner in a fast-paced, continuously changing environment.
  • Superior written skills for both print and web, strong oral communication, good project management skills, proven social media skills, and the ability to prioritize and work on various projects simultaneously.
  • Keen sense of what makes a newsworthy story is essential.
  • Established media contacts, media monitoring/media monitoring software experience, and experience working in a large-scale environment as well as working both independently and as part of a team are assets.
