The City of Victoria is seeking a skilled and forward-thinking Mechanic to join our dedicated Fleet team. Our ideal candidate holds a Commercial Transport Red Seal certification, but we also welcome candidates with Heavy-Duty or Automotive Red Seal certifications.
Please note this position’s schedule covers our afternoon shift, with hours from 3:30 PM to 12:00 AM, Monday to Friday.
In this role, you’ll service and maintain a wide range of vehicles and equipment, including heavy-duty trucks, machinery, emergency response vehicles, and utility vehicles. As part of a collaborative and safety-focused team, you’ll play a vital role to ensure the City’s fleet supports essential services and keeps Victoria running smoothly.
Experience in a fast-paced, mixed fleet environment is highly valued. You are detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and enthusiastic about embracing reliability-centered maintenance practices and innovative technology.
The successful applicant may be eligible for a tool allowance (currently $0.35 per hour). Depending on their work schedule, a shift differential premium (currently $0.75 or $0.85, depending on specific hours of work) may apply. These premiums are defined by the CUPE Local 50 Collective Agreement, and additional details are available upon request.

Work is generated by work order or assigned by supervisor. Work is reviewed through reports to supervisor. Issues involving deviations from trade procedures and major expenditures are referred to supervisor.
Lift and move heavy material and equipment. (often)

Mechanical Repair Shop.
Work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to asbestos. (rare)

Exposure to engine oil, grease and fumes. (continuous)
Work outside in all weather conditions. (rare)
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
High school graduation.
Current and valid B.C. Certificate of Trades Qualification in either Automotive, Heavy Duty or Commercial Transport Mechanics. (4 years)
Motor Vehicle Branch Inspection Licence with air brake endorsement. (20 hours)
Aerial Device Training. (88 hours)
Current and valid Certification or Licence in Compressed Natural Gas Fuelled Vehicles and Compressed LPG Vehicles. (80 hours) (premium item)
Current and valid Class 3 B.C. Driver's Licence with air endorsement.
3 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
May be requested to obtain additional certifications.
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
