DUTIES

The Marine Fiberglass / Gel Coat Technician is responsible for conducting hull, fiberglass, paint, and gelcoat repairs on various types of vessels ranging from 14’-50’. Harbor Vue Marina is seeking an experienced technician but is willing to train the right candidate.

FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Prepare boat surfaces for fiberglass repair / gel coating by cleaning, sanding, and applying appropriate materials.
  2. Cutting and measuring fiberglass materials according to specifications.
  3. Mixing resins and catalysts in the correct proportions.
  4. Applying resin-soaked fiberglass or cloths onto surfaces.
  5. Using rollers and brushes to consolidate the fiberglass and resin, ensuring there are no voids or air bubbles.
  6. Maintaining equipment used in the repair process.
  7. Ensuring all finished products meet quality standards and safety regulations.
  8. Cleaning up work areas after the completion of projects.
  9. Mix paints and gelcoat materials and pigments to achieve desired colors and textures.
  10. Apply paints and gelcoat using spray guns, brushes, or rollers, ensuring even coverage and smooth finishes.
  11. Repair and touch up damaged gel coats, matching colors and textures to the existing surface.
  12. Perform quality inspections to identify imperfections, such as air bubbles or uneven finishes, and rectify them promptly.
  13. Follow safety protocols and guidelines for handling chemicals, ensuring a safe working environment.
  14. Maintain and clean equipment, including spray guns, brushes, and mixing tools, to ensure optimal performance.
  15. Collaborate with other team members, such as boat repair technicians or boatyard personnel, to coordinate workflow and prioritize projects.
  16. Keep accurate records of materials used, time spent on each project, and any additional notes or observations.
  17. Stay updated on industry trends and techniques through continuous learning and professional development.
  18. Assist with winterization and boat wrapping in the fall.
  19. Detail as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. If unexperienced, the willingness and aptitude to learn and retain new knowledge and skills.
  3. A positive and upbeat attitude and the ability to work in a fast-paced time-sensitive environment.
  4. Proven experience as a Marine Fiberglass / Gel Coat Technician or in a similar role within the marine industry.
  5. Thorough understanding of gelcoat application techniques, including mixing ratios, surface preparation, and finishing processes.
  6. Proficient in color matching and blending paints and gelcoat pigments.
  7. Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality finishes with minimal errors.
  8. Ability to work independently and efficiently, managing multiple projects and deadlines.
  9. Basic knowledge of boat construction and materials.
  10. Familiarity with safety practices and protocols when working with chemicals and hazardous materials.
  11. Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with team members and customers.
  12. Highly responsive and committed to delivering exceptional customer satisfaction in a timely manner.
  13. Adapt to varying weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors.

The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 50lbs/23kg and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100lbs/45kg.
