EndPovertyEdmonton’s (EPE) goal is to end poverty within our community in a generation (30 years). This is accomplished by working with the whole community – private, public, not-for-profit and individual – to ensure appropriate perspective representation, inclusion, innovation and collaboration can occur. The work is undertaken by acting as trusted advisors and advocates, providing collaborative leadership, and convening and brokering innovative partnerships for change.

We are currently seeking a Full-Time Managing Director to join our EPE team. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Managing Director is a leader who will guide EPE through a process of healing and transformation, repairing past harms and inspiring a visionary future that reignites community engagement and drives the generational eradication of poverty.

During the first phase, the Managing Director will be a transitional role, that will be instrumental in working with an established consulting firm to shape the organization’s future direction, developing a fresh vision and governance structure during the reenvisioning process.

In its second phase, this role will lead EPE through a community-centered approach. The long-term trajectory will involve managing the new organization’s daily operations, focusing on developing and prototyping community-based governance models and conducting innovative experiments aligned with reimagined strategic directions.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities

Governance Development
The Managing Director works closely with the EPE Board in developing the structure and processes of decision-making in the organization that embodies the directions and commitments of the EPE envisioning.

  • Facilitating the rebuilding of the organization that is community-centered, value-driven, open to radical/transformative possibilities and trustworthy.
  • Leading the future organization by exploring and prototyping governance models and experiments grounded on community and innovative strategic directions for EPE.
  • Promote forward thinking and support the enactment of structures and processes that disrupt and change the status quo and move toward a new way of doing things in the future.

Partner Relationship, Engagement & Advocacy

  • Champion the EPE reenvisioned goals, strategy and priorities with members of the community and with partners with a focus on collective impact, reconciliation, human rights, innovation and the importance of lived experiences.
  • Lead government relations and policy advocacy, including identifying existing and emerging windows of opportunity, ensuring compliance reporting; building, maintaining and leveraging networks for policy objectives, acting as advisor for policy advocacy recommendations and strategies.
  • Manage partner and collaborator expectations across community, non-profit, and municipal government sectors and provide them with immediate, tangible value.
  • Establish, build upon and maintain position relationships with a wide variety of community and stakeholder partners to resource support for the accomplishment of strategic goals.
  • Look for opportunities to influence and work with other organizations to coordinate strategic objectives so that all stakeholders are moving in the same direction and taking up innovative approaches.

Strategic Leadership
The Managing Director focuses on EPE’s overall redefined/ reimagined directions and goals and how to achieve them through a set of broad and long-term actions.

  • Stewarding the organization through its transition, leading the envisioning of the organization’s mandate and governance.
  • Leading and facilitating the reenvisioning process, ensuring that outcomes are grounded on community experience and insights as well as relevant and current body of knowledge.
  • Developing a strategic plan that translates the reimagined directions into actionable areas in the next 2-3 years.
  • Identifying strategic alliances and venturing into previously unexplored opportunities.

Organizational & Operational Leadership
The Managing Director demonstrates organization and operations leadership to staff and partners through articulating a clear vision and goal of the reenvisioned EPE and ensuring that the day-to-day operations are connected to the strategic directions and accountability to the community.

  • Provide collaborative leadership to the EPE organization through a shared leadership approach by ensuring a supportive, innovative and action-focused team culture and by actively participating in and supporting prototyping efforts.
  • Demonstrate transparent resource allocation to meet goals, ensure appropriate financial tracking and reporting and deliver impactful results.
  • Lead human resource service provision, including reviewing resumes, conducting interviews and making decisions for hiring new members of the EPE Team.
  • Develops and monitors the annual budget and other financial measures.
  • Provide input and direction to the EPE team, assist with removing barriers to completing work, and monitor progress.
  • Lead EPE communications using language consistent with the Reimagining proposal to engage and build public support and by collaboratively shaping messaging, setting campaign priorities, managing and ensuring brand and organizational reputation.

Knowledge & Skills Required
Include but are not limited to:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or related field, would be considered as asset.
  • Five years of experience in a community-based project, social movements or advocacy campaigns.
  • Previous experience and knowledge of organizing models and principles/techniques (such as deep canvassing).
  • Previous experience managing an organization with staff.
  • Previous volunteer experience on a non-profit board or working as a front-line worker.
  • Significant directly related leadership and corresponding program experience is required.
  • Experience successfully leading significant and multidimensional projects and collective impact/community change initiatives.
  • Working knowledge of Google Suite and other digital productivity tools, including social media platforms.
  • Experience working with inter-cultural and Indigenous communities and those with the lived experience of trauma and/or poverty.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging with and providing support to vulnerable populations.
  • Balanced use of critical and creative thinking to analyze and interpret information to make decisions, make recommendations, and to solve problems.
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exemplary interpersonal and relationship management skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in community development and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated passion, empathy and openness to diversity and ambiguity.
  • Understanding of contributing factors that lead to poverty as well as the levers to prevent, mitigate, eliminate and overcome poverty.
  • Knowledge of social movement theory and understanding theories of change.
  • Solid knowledge of social innovation and complex change initiatives, as well as of existing social supports, community networks, and systems at work in game changer domains.
  • Strong political acumen and understanding power dynamics.
  • Understanding and acumen in the development and advocacy of policy recommendations, including principals of government relations.
  • Advanced understanding and experience in areas of collective impact, organizational development, project management, community engagement, resource and strategy development, governance, and policy change processes.
  • Strong understanding of research and analysis methods, including the ability to make balanced decisions for the good of the organization.

This 18-month full-time term position, with potential for extension, offers a competitive salary between $95,000 and $100,000, along with a comprehensive benefit package.
